Aquablation is a heat-free robotic assisted procedure that uses high-speed water jet to precisely remove excess prostate tissue

The first procedures of a treatment called Aquablation therapy have been performed in the Republic of Ireland at the Mater University Hospital in Dublin.

Enlarged prostate, also known as BPH, is a condition that affects around half of all men by the age of 60, and can lead to acute urinary retention and kidney infection.

Aquablation is a heat-free robotic assisted procedure that uses high-speed water jet to precisely remove excess prostate tissue, minimising the risk of side effects, like sexual dysfunction.

Some traditional treatments like surgery can be challenging for patients, and may cause long-term quality of life complications, urinary incontinence and sexual health issues.

Experts say Aquablation has been clinically proven to deliver significant symptom relief while preserving sexual function and urinary continence, across prostates of all shapes and sizes.

Aquablation also offers an advance for younger men, in their 40s and 50s, with an enlarged prostate.

Thomas Hogan said Aquablation treatment has made a big difference to his life

Thomas Hogan is 53 and had a severely enlarged prostate.

He was feeling constant pressure and it was affecting his quality of life, including getting up regularly at night to go to the bathroom.

He underwent the new Aquablation treatment a few weeks ago and he says it has made a big difference to his life.
