Live: Spotfires at Carrara as Hawks, Suns in physical encounter

The article covers an Australian Football League (AFL) match between the Suns and the Hawks on the Gold Coast. It discusses the Suns' recent struggles with consecutive losses and their need for a win to avoid dropping out of the top 10. The Hawks are coming off a bye and have won two of their last three games. The article includes updates on player performances, such as Mac Andrew's intercept possessions and Nick Watson's goal-scoring potential.

9.41pm 3QT: Petracca’s turn for some magic

By

Christian Petracca has roved a marking contest to perfection.

The former Demons star hit the pack at pace, bursting through the congestion and kicking a goal for the Suns.

The Suns trail by seven points as we hit three-quarter time.

9.36pm Long boots his third major

By

That’s goal number three to Ben Long. He is a dead-eye kick.

He marked on the lead, went back and slotted the kick from 40 metres out, dead in front.

The Suns are sticking with Hawthorn in this third term. Every time the Hawks look like they will break away, the home side hits back.

Hawks 12.8 (80) lead Suns 10.6 (66)

9.34pm What a beauty from ‘the Wizard’

By

Nick Watson has kicked another cracker.

He ran onto the ball inside the forward 50, turned on a dime and snapped truly from 35 metres out. Brilliant.

He is an absolute superstar. Every time he goes near the ball, some magic unfolds.

It gives Hawthorn a 20-point lead with five minutes left in the third term.

9.26pm King hits the scorecard

By

It’s hard to believe, but Ben King has taken until the third term to kick his first goal.

It was needed, bringing the Suns back to within 14 points.

King has had just three possessions for the night.

9.21pm Hawks make Suns pay for error

By

Oh no, Suns defender Sam Collins has been pinged for holding the ball in front of goal. He took a mark and seemed to think Mabior Chol had not been told to stand as he wandered sideways.

Instead, Chol was allowed to close him down in a tackle. Then Chol kicked a goal.

It’s such a hard rule to interpret. It could have been a 50-metre penalty.

Instead, it was a massive mistake or misunderstanding from Collins. The Hawks seized on the moment and have kicked three straight in this third term, pushing the lead back out to 20 points.

Will Day has been the catalyst. He is such a classy midfielder.

Hawks 11.8 (74) lead Suns 8.6 (54)

9.16pm It’s a two-point ball game

By

The Suns have opened the scoring in the third quarter with a goal to Ben Long – his second of the game.

It is now a two-point margin between these two sides, and we have a serious game on our hands.

Hawks 8.8 (56) lead Suns 8.6 (54)

8.53pm HT: Rioli ruled out for the night

By

Hawthorn have clung on to an eight-point lead at half-time after a Gold Coast fight back.

But in bad news for the Suns, defender Daniel Rioli has been ruled out of the game after copping a hit to the jaw.

Daniel Rioli and Josh Weddle (both pictured) were the centre of an eye-catching first-half incident. Getty Images Rioli was crunched by Hawthorn’s Josh Weddle in an old-fashioned hip-and-shoulder motion. It initially looked to be a fair bump, considering Rioli was able to get straight up and take his kick, but he is now benched for the game.

If it was the Weddle incident that ruled him out for the night, the Hawthorn defender faces scrutiny from the match review officer and a possible suspension for a high hit.

8.50pm Hawks skipper loses his cool

By

What is up with Hawthorn tonight?

They have given up two dumb 50-metre penalties.

The latest was a result of skipper Jai Newcombe arriving late and crunching opponent Matt Rowell after he had taken a mark. Newcombe was never going to get there on time. It was completely unnecessary.

Luckily for the Hawks, Rowell hit missed the 35-metre shot at goal.

The first 50-metre was given away by a James Sicily brain fade. Three times the umpire spoke to Sicily and he totally ignored him.

8.47pm Suns turn up the heat

By

This game is hard one to work out. The Suns have now kicked four goals in a row.

That followed seven straight goals from Hawthorn.

As a result, Gold Coast have closed the lead to nine points with three minutes until half-time.

In-demand Suns forward Jed Walter. AFL Photos The last goal came from Jed Walter. He took a strong mark on the boundary line, deep in the Suns’ forward 50. He was then able to snap truly.

It must be a relief for Walter. He dropped a sitter in the opening term, which should have resulted in a goal.

Instead, it was the beginning of Hawthorn’s run of seven goals.
