The small island of Lipsi is earning international recognition not only for its unspoiled coastline, but also for its pioneering approach to sustainability and water management.
Blessed with crystal-clear waters, laid-back atmosphere, and 23 secluded beaches free from rows of sunbeds and large-scale tourism infrastructure, the small Dodecanese island of Lipsi is increasingly gaining recognition for something else: its commitment to sustainable tourism and water management.
That reputation was highlighted recently at the inaugural “Water Dialogues” conference in Rhodes last month, which focused on the challenges of water scarcity and flooding in island Greece. Speaking at the event, Lipsi Mayor Fotis Mangos reflected on how dramatically perceptions of his island have changed over the years.
Recalling his student days, Mangos noted that many Greeks had never heard of Lipsi and would often ask where it was located, sometimes confusing it with entirely different islands. At the time, he said, he hoped to help his birthplace secure the recognition it deserved.
Today, Lipsi has achieved exactly that. While still retaining its low-key charm, the island has emerged as a model for sustainable development, earning attention both in Greece and abroad for its environmental initiatives and careful management of precious natural resources.
According to Mangos, Lipsi has succeeded in turning the challenges of small-island life into opportunities. Effective management of water resources, waste, and energy has become central to the island’s development strategy, helping to strengthen its resilience in the face of growing environmental pressures.
The mayor stressed that successful water management is not simply a matter of infrastructure projects, but depends equally on long-term planning, cooperation, and, most importantly, community participation. Lipsi, he argued, demonstrates that even a small island can innovate and lead by example.
Complimentary goals
The island’s growing reputation has been reinforced by a series of sustainability-focused initiatives in recent years, attracting international attention for promoting a tourism model that prioritizes environmental protection and quality of life over mass development.
With only a handful of hotels on the island and no sprawling resort complexes, Lipsi has consciously charted a different course from many Mediterranean destinations. A recent tourism campaign highlighted the island’s “sunbed-less” beaches, encouraging visitors to embrace a simpler and more authentic seaside experience while helping preserve the raw, natural character of the coastline.
The island has also taken practical steps to reduce plastic waste. One initiative has seen Lipsi significantly cut its use of single-use plastic bottles through the installation of desalination kiosks along the waterfront, providing residents and visitors with easy access to drinking water and reducing reliance on imported bottled supplies.
For curious travelers, however, the appeal of Lipsi remains rooted in the island itself. Hidden coves, quiet beaches, traditional tavernas, and a slower pace of life continue to attract visitors seeking an authentic Aegean experience. The surrounding islets, including the picturesque Aspronisia, add further opportunities for exploration, whether by boat, kayak, or organized excursion.
The island’s understated charms have not gone unnoticed. In a recent feature for the UK’s Sun newspaper, travel writer Malcolm Tattersall described Lipsi as a “hidden gem” of the Aegean and likened it to the mythical island of Ogygia from Homer’s “Odyssey.” “I can’t imagine anyone wanting to leave this lovely, laid-back island,” he wrote.
As many destinations grapple with the environmental impacts of overtourism and climate change, Lipsi offers a different vision for the future – one in which sustainable development and tourism do not have to be competing priorities, but complementary goals. It is a formula that is helping this once-overlooked island gain recognition far beyond the shores of the Dodecanese.
