"When you win and lift that trophy, you know that all the hard work has paid off", says Domen Makuc, the best player in the final tournament of the Handball Champions League.
Domen Makuc's six-year spell at Barcelona was crowned with a Champions League trophy and the MVP of the final tournament.
The 13th European championship was won by FC Barcelona, who defeated FC Füchse from Berlin in the final of the Champions League in Cologne on Sunday with 37:34. The Slovenian national team played a big role in Barcelona's 13th title.

Domen Makuc, welcome to Barcelona, even though it's only been 12 hours since the end of the season and your victory over Barcelona... it's always nice to celebrate this title.
Cologne is the last event of the handball season every year, all the championships must also be finished before the final tournament of the Champions League. Barcelona of course did not have any major problems in the Spanish championship, but completely different was of course the end of the club season at the highest level in Europe. Maybe it was known that we have the experience of having played several of these final tournaments, although we know that in both teams against which we played, there are many quality players at the highest level and they also know how to play such matches. Fortunately, we had both matches, at least I think so, under control. From the first minute we were just conscious and at the end of the season we finished perfectly, winning all the trophies.
You mentioned the four best teams, but at least here Barcelona is a little bit ahead of the game. It's the most organized, it's the most playful. You can make a deal before the game, but in the end it changes with the defense of the opponent. Berlin played deep 3-3, or almost pressing. We knew they could do it, but there wasn't much time to devote to it in training.
Makuc moved from Celje Laško Brewery to Barcelona in the summer of 2020, and the next stop is Kiel.
Speaking of jealousy, it was noticed that there was none. Even when the captain of the Slovenian national team and long-time Barcelona teammate Blaž Janc confided in you that you had become the most valuable player, the moment was really great. He shouted and literally shook you. What can I say? I think this video says it all. How much my teammates give me for this achievement. It's always the achievement of the whole team. We all know how hard we work to win the most important trophy, when you win and raise this trophy, you know that all the effort is worth it.
But you were a bit shy when Dica Mem offered you the trophy to lift it in front of the whole team, he's our captain, he's our leader on and off the field, and I think it's right for the captain to do that, he wanted me to help him, I wanted him to do it, because I know he had a hard time, and he deserves to be the captain of the team, so I lifted the trophy in his honor, or I helped him in the end, and here's another memory for a lifetime.
Your story is a story with a current happy ending, the final goal is yet to be seen, and to it, I believe, there are still quite a few years of handball. From a super talent to the most valuable player of the Champions League with a lot of difficulties. How did you relive the awarding of the most valuable player, from Hrpelj to Köln? It must be very emotional. At the end, when you see or when you know where you came from, what you have gone through and when you know that it was sometimes very difficult for yourself ... Although I usually think positively that everything happens for a reason, I have often wondered why some things had to happen, especially injuries. When all this effort comes true, I really hope something special happens and that I can also help in future interventions in the club to reach the highest levels.
You're going to the second biggest club, Kiel, also one of the most successful clubs on the old continent. To the German league, a different league, much more difficult, but with a nice journey of the most valuable player of the final tournament, the European club champion. You raised expectations even more overnight? We know what team it is when we talk about Kiel too. It's true that maybe in the last two or in the past years, they haven't had much luck with the results. They've had problems with injuries, that was certainly known to them, and I'm certainly going there with a winning mentality. With a desire to win trophies. We know that as far as the German championship is concerned, it's much harder to win than the Spanish one. But that's also why it's so much worse. I hope that the winning mentality from Barcelona is there and that Kiel will also bring it back to life, what it deserves.
In Barcelona, you go to t…
