Indonesian films dominate domestic market with 67 pct share: Minister

Culture Minister Fadli Zon reported that locally produced films hold a 67% share of the domestic market, noting that Indonesians increasingly prefer Indonesian films. Jakarta (ANTARA) - Culture Minister Fadli Zon stated that locally produced films have dominated the domestic market, as reflected in their market share, which has reached 67 percent to date.

"Indonesians now prefer watching Indonesian films. Their market share is 67 percent. Roughly 67 percent of films shown in cinemas are Indonesian films," Zon remarked during a press conference here on Thursday.

However, he acknowledged that film distribution still faces challenges, especially in regions that do not yet have cinema screens.

According to him, the uneven availability of cinemas is closely linked to investment. Therefore, he called on the private sector to increase investment in support of cinema development.

"We hope the private sector will step in, because this is a business," he added.

The minister also expressed readiness to coordinate with sovereign wealth Danantara regarding the challenge in order to support more equitable distribution of national films across Indonesia.

In addition, the government has proposed an additional budget ceiling of Rp3.9 trillion for the upcoming fiscal year, part of which is intended to support the film industry development.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture and the Indonesian Film Board (BPI) are preparing a draft revision of the Film Law.

"The revision will enable the law to better adapt to advances in information and communication technology, AI, and other developments. It will also involve improvements to institutions, including the BPI, the Film Censorship Board (LSF), and others," he remarked.

Earlier, data from the Indonesian Film Board showed that as of February 2024, Indonesia had 517 cinema locations with a total of 2,145 screens across 115 districts and cities.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chair of LSF Noorca M. Massardi stated on October 3, 2024, that Indonesia had around 800 cinema buildings with approximately 3,000 screens nationwide.
