Guyanese candidate for U.N. summit points out declining credibility of organization

Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, the representative of Guyana at the United Nations, emphasized during a meeting with UN members in New York that she would work to restore the credibility of the organization if elected as the next Secretary-General. Zadnja v vrsti kandidatov za naslednika generalnega sekretarja ZN Antonia Guterresa veleposlanica Gvajane pri ZN Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett je na četrtkovem zaslišanju med članicami ZN v New Yorku poudarila, da si bo v primeru izvolitve prizadevala za povrnitev kredibilnosti organizacije.

Nekdanja zunanja ministrica Gvajane Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett , ki je kot članica Varnostnega sveta ZN prejšnji dve leti sodelovala s slovensko delegacijo, je med drugim dejala, da je kredibilnost ZN v zadnjih letih trpela, ker javnost organizacijo ocenjuje glede na mir in varnost. Trenutno je na svetu največje število spopadov od druge svetovne vojne in nič ne kaže, da bi se umirjali.

Rodrigues-Birkett je dejala, da so ZN veliko več kot le mir in varnost ter omenila delo na področju boja proti boleznim, izobraževanja, humanitarne pomoči in varstva okolja. Zato meni, da je mogoče ugled in kredibilnost organizacije izboljšati s tega vidika.

Za naslednika generalnega sekretarja ZN Antonia Guterresa se poteguje sedaj skupaj šest kandidatk in kandidatov, vlada pa neuradno mnenje, da je napočil čas za prvo generalno sekretarko.

Poleg Rodrigues-Birkett so svojo kandidaturo doslej predstavili še Michelle Bachelet iz Čila, Rebeca Grynspan iz Kostarike, Maria Fernanda Espinosa iz Ekvadorja, Macky Sall iz Senegala in Rafael Grossi iz Argentine.

Evropa tokrat brez kandidata

Latinska Amerika trdi, da je glede na rotacijo zemljepisnih skupin ZN sedaj ona na vrsti, vendar pri tem zanemarja dejstvo, da skupina vzhodna Evropa doslej generalnega sekretarja še ni imela. Pred leti je za položaj kandidiral tudi nekdanji predsednik Danilo Türk , tokrat pa iz vzhodne Evrope ni nobenega kandidata.

Varnostni svet ZN bo začel postopek izbire kandidata konec julija, pri čemer bo odločilno mnenje stalnih članic - ZDA, Rusija, Kitajska, Velika Britanija in Francija. Varnostni svet ZN bo nato kandidatko ali kandidata predlagal v potrditev Generalni skupščini.
