Govt hopes seven great habits strengthen home-schooled kids character

Indonesia's Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education emphasizes the importance of implementing the Seven Great Indonesian Children Habits (KAIH) in non-formal education units, including homeschooling institutions. The director of Non-Formal and Informal Education highlighted the critical role of parents in instilling these values into children's daily lives. The ministry encourages collaboration between educational institutions and parents to support students' development of independence and social skills through adaptable and contextual learning methods.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education stated the implementation of the Seven Great Indonesian Children Habits (KAIH) movement could strengthen the students' character education in Non-Formal Education Units (SPNF), including home schooling institutions.

Director of Non-Formal and Informal Education at the Ministry, I Gusti Made Ardana, said in the home schooling settings, the family environment serves as the first and primary source of habits that students observe and emulate.

"The role of parents is crucial in ensuring the values of the Seven Great Indonesian Children Habits are truly implemented and become part of daily life," Ardana said during a webinar "Solution on Best Practices for Implementing the 7 KAIH in Non-Formal Education Units" here on Thursday.

As part of the education system, he added, SPNF has a strategic role in supporting students’ independence and social skills through learning methods that are more adaptive, flexible, and contextual.

Therefore, he continued, home schooling institutions affiliated with Community Learning Activity Centers (PKBM) should actively involve parents, considering all learning activities are conducted at home.

"Efforts by educational institutions must go hand in hand with the active involvement of parents, as families bear the most fundamental moral responsibility in guiding children. We strongly hope that all SPNF institutions, in synergy with parents, can implement the 7 KAIH," he said.

On the same occasion, home schooling practitioner Mila Fitrina said that implementing the 7 KAIH requires not only continuous practice but also consistent journal recording so that its implementation can be measured.

"Repeated practice becomes a habit, habits become character, and character shapes civilization," Fitrina said.

The 7 KAIH movement consists of waking up early, worshipping, exercising, eating healthy and nutritious food, enjoying studying, engaging with the community, and going to bed early.
