Südafrika und Tschechien ist bei ihrem jeweils zweiten Spiel nur ein 1:1 (1:0) gelungen. Michal Sadílek (6.) sorgte im Hallenstadion von Atlanta für die frühe Führung der Tschechen, ein Handelfmeter des Südafrikaners Teboho Mokoena (83.) kurz vor Ende des Spiels reichte zum Ausgleich. Nach ihren Auftaktniederlagen standen beide Teams der Gruppe A unter Zugzwang.

Auf den Rängen waren große Lücken sichtbar, die Zuschauerzahl wurde mit 67.442 angegeben. Offiziell können 68.239 Fans die WM-Spiele in der Arena verfolgen. Erstmals kam bei dieser WM eine Schiedsrichterin zum Einsatz. Tori Penso ist ohnehin erst die zweite Frau in der Geschichte der Männer-WM, die ein Endrundenspiel pfiff.

Mit dem Unentschieden haben beide Teams noch die Chance, weiterzukommen. Dafür brauchen die Tschechen zum Gruppenabschluss gegen Gastgeber Mexiko allerdings einen Sieg. Dasselbe gilt für die Südafrikaner, die parallel am 24. Juni gegen Südkorea antreten.
