The EU summit continues on the future budget of the Union

The EU summit continued today with discussions on the future budget of the Union for the years 2028–34. Leaders of EU member states are negotiating the financial framework based on Cyprus' proposal. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated before the summit that the proposed level of funding by Cyprus is too high according to Finland's view. On the first day of the summit, leaders discussed topics including Ukraine, the Middle East, the competitiveness of the EU, and global economic challenges. Particular attention was paid to the significant trade deficit in the EU's trade with China.

EU:n kaksipäiväinen huippukokous jatkuu tänään keskusteluilla unionin vuosien 2028–34 budjetista. EU-maiden johtajat neuvottelevat tulevasta rahoituskehyksestä puheenjohtajamaa Kyproksen esityksen pohjalta.

Pääministeri Petteri Orpo (kok.) sanoi ennen huippukokousta, että Kyproksen ehdottama rahoituksen kokonaistaso on Suomen mielestä liian korkea.

Huippukokouksen ensimmäisenä päivänä EU-maiden johtajat keskustelivat muun muassa Ukrainasta, Lähi-idästä sekä EU:n kilpailukyvystä ja globaaleista taloushaasteista. Esille nousi erityisesti EU:n Kiinan kanssa käymän kaupan valtava alijäämä.
