The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) expressed concern in an emergency resolution over what it called captured media in Serbia.

A resolution adopted by the EFJ General Assembly meeting in Ankara expressed “serious concern over escalating attacks, threats, institutional failures, and increasing “media capture” in Serbia”. The resolution was submmitted by the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) and Nezavisnost union.

The resolution cites assaults, death threats, intimidation, surveillance, smear campaigns, and cases where police allegedly failed to protect journalists or were themselves involved in attacks. It also warned of organized intimidation by individuals with prior criminal convictions.

The EFJ called on the Serbian authorities to investigate all cases, ensure protection for journalists, and stop smear campaigns and political pressure on the media.

It also urged the European Union to make measurable progress on media freedom and related standards a condition for Serbia’s EU accession. It also raised concern over the planned sale of Adria News Network.
