With an eye on the lead, Australia and hosts USA open round two of Group D.

The United States Men’s National Team’s (USMNT) four-goal performance in its 2026 World Cup opener kicked off a wild weekend of soccer across the United States and the other host countries.

Team USA dominated Paraguay 4-1 to set the tone for its group.

The USMNT began group play against Paraguay Friday night in Los Angeles, the first match in Group D to take place. The United States is the favorite to win its group and aims to reach the round of 16 for the second consecutive tournament, after not qualifying for the World Cup in 2018.

It didn’t take long for the stars and stripes to strike first, as an attack led by star forward Christian Pulisic and midfielder Weston McKennie resulted in an own goal off Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla at just the seven-minute mark.

The fireworks were only beginning for the American team. Forward Folarin Balogun made his name one to watch for the remainder of the tournament, scoring back-to-back goals in the 31st minute and the fifth minute of the added time in the first half to give the USMNT a 3-0 lead heading into the final 45 minutes of play.

Balogun joined America’s national team in 2023 after initially competing for England on an international level. Balogun was born in Brooklyn to Nigerian parents, but moved to London shortly after, where he grew up. He chose to represent the United States instead of England or Nigeria. This decision looks to be the right one, as he is providing a much-needed offensive spark.

After slowing down the pace in the second half, Paraguay was able to cut the lead to two following a goal in the 73rd minute from Maurício Magalhães Prado. America’s Giovanni Reyna extended the lead back to three after scoring in the eighth minute of added time in the second half, resulting in the 4-1 win for the USMNT.

With the win, the United States earned three points and carries a +3 goal differential into possible tiebreaker scenarios for now. The U.S. is now tied for the lead in Group D, as Australia’s 2-0 win over Turkey earned it three points as well. Paraguay and Turkey both sit at zero points following the loss.

Group D play will resume Friday, June 19. The United States will take on Australia in a pivotal game to see who will win the group. With a win, the USMNT will stand firmly in a spot to win its group and advance to the knockout stages. With a loss, America will still be fighting for first or second place positioning in the group, where both teams advance to the next round. Turkey will take on Paraguay later that night.

The range of outcomes for the U.S.’s opponent following the group stages is large, as the team will not have an idea who it may be facing until the final days of group play. Updates will be provided as it gets closer.

While the host country usually makes it out of the group stages, the United States could be the first host country to win since France in 1998. In order to hoist the trophy, the U.S. will have to potentially face some of the biggest favorites to win this year’s tournament in Spain, Brazil, France, England, Portugal, Germany, and the reigning champion, Argentina.

Besides the USMNT’s victory, many other notable games and highlights took place over the weekend. The first day and weekend of the 2026 World Cup did not disappoint.

South Africa’s Yaya Sithole had a complete meltdown against Mexico , allowing a goal and earning a red card, which resulted in another goal for Mexico in its 2-0 win in the opening match.

Korea and Czechia had a much better match, as all three goals were scored in the final thirty minutes of regulation, including back-to-back goals from Korea in the 67th and 80th minutes to propel them to a 2-1 win.

Sunday’s matches provided a lot for fans as well. Curaçao competed in its first-ever World Cup game. It’s the smallest country by landmass and total population to ever make the World Cup. Unfortunately, the small nation had to go up against Germany — the four-time World Cup champion — and was soundly beaten 7-1.

The Netherlands and Japan had a much closer game, with the two countries going back and forth in the second half. Japan’s Daichi Kamada scored the equalizer in the 88th minute to stun the Dutch faithful.

Ivory Coast continued the trend of late goals on Sunday as Amad Diallo scored the only goal of the match in the 90th minute, upsetting Ecuador 1-0.
