Os egípcios, a disputarem o seu quarto Mundial e liderados em campo por Mohamed Salah, adiantaram-se no marcador aos 20 minutos, por Emam Ashour, mas os belgas igualaram na segunda metade, aos 66', com um golo na própria baliza de Mohamed Hany, ao tentar evitar que a bola chegasse a Lukaku, que tinha entrado em campo apenas 28 segundos antes.
Durante o primeiro tempo, o Egipto fez apenas dois remates à baliza contrária, mas ambos enquadrados (e um deu golo), enquanto a Bélgica não foi capaz de colocar à prova o guarda-redes Mostafa Shoubir nas oito tentativas que realizou. Na segunda parte a Bélgica forçou o ataque e empurrou o Egipto para a sua área, embora a selecção africana tenha estado muito perto do segundo golo um par de vezes, uma deles com Salah a obrigar Courtois a uma grande defesa.
