Em julho de 1990, num fim de semana que o Autódromo do Estoril celebrava a ‘maioridade’ (foi inaugurado em 1972), o circuito foi palco da primeira prova de Superbike livre, oficializada pela então nova Federação Nacional de Motociclismo (atual Federação de Motociclismo de Portugal).

Esta nasceu de um confronto de ideias com a então existente Federação Portuguesa de Motociclismo, assente no calendário e peso das opiniões dos pilotos, sendo que nesse mesmo ano acabou por ser reconhecida como a representante do país na Federação Internacional de Motociclismo.

Passo relevante nessa afirmação de estatuto foi a realização, com sucesso, desta primeira corrida de Superbike livre, que coroou o piloto Manuel João ao volante de uma Kawasaki ZXR 750.
