Het Openbaar Ministerie verdenkt de 19-jarige bestuurder van het fatale ongeluk in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen van dood door schuld en het toebrengen van zwaar lichamelijk letsel door schuld. Hij blijft zeker twee weken langer vastzitten, bepaalde de rechter-commissaris vandaag.

De man uit Hulst wordt verdacht van het veroorzaken van het ongeluk waarbij drie kinderen uit groep 8 en de directeur van hun school donderdag om het leven kwamen. Daarnaast raakten drie kinderen gewond.

Over de oorzaak van het ongeluk is nog altijd veel onbekend. Het onderzoek loopt nog en duurt nog "enige tijd", aldus het OM. Over twee weken bepaalt de rechtbank opnieuw of de man vast blijft zitten, schrijft Omroep Zeeland (opent in nieuw venster) .

De groep leerlingen van groep 8 en de directeur van basisschool De Warande uit Axel waren vorige week met de fiets onderweg naar het schoolkamp toen ze werden aangereden door de auto op de N290. De bestuurder werd direct daarna aangehouden.

In Zeeuws-Vlaanderen wordt sindsdien gerouwd. Zo liggen er inmiddels vele honderden knuffels en bloemen bij de basisschool. Duizenden in het wit geklede mensen kwamen zondag in Axel bij elkaar voor een stille tocht . Voor de getroffen families is geld ingezameld om de uitvaarten te bekostigen.
