Despite the revocation, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai announced that Gandhi would proceed with his visit to Prayagraj on August 8 and meet students. He called on the state government and local authorities to provide an alternative venue for the event, alleging that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government was deliberately obstructing the gathering for political reasons. Rai claimed that the administration was “afraid” of Gandhi’s presence and influence among young people. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi also voiced her disapproval of the cancellation, expressing confusion over the administration’s apprehension. She criticized the decision, suggesting that the authorities had no valid reason to block the event. Her comments echoed sentiments from other Congress leaders who have accused the BJP of attempting to suppress dissenting voices through such measures. In a separate development, former Congress spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, who recently joined the BJP, mocked Rahul Gandhi’s recent social media post aimed at engaging with Generation Z. Poonawalla interpreted the Korean finger heart emoji used by Gandhi as a symbol of “counting fingers” rather than a gesture of affection, implying that the Gandhi family was involved in corrupt practices.
