On Saturday, officials and citizens gathered in Dalj, near Osijek, to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the tragic events that claimed the lives of 39 Croatian defenders during the Homeland War. The ceremony took place at the border police station in Dalj, where a wreath was laid and candles were lit at the memorial site dedicated to the victims of the war. Among those present were high-ranking government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Davor Božinović, and Defence Minister Ivan Anušić, alongside representatives of local authorities, families of the deceased, and members of veterans' organizations. The commemorative event began with the lighting of candles at the memorial to the victims of the Homeland War in Aljmaš, followed by the laying of a wreath in the Danube River in memory of the displaced residents of Aljmaš, Dalj, and Erdut who were evacuated by boat on August 1, 1991. A symbolic march of military flags was held from the cultural hall in Dalj to the border police station, during which a solemn remembrance ceremony was conducted. Families of the fallen, along with representatives of the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Defense, and the Croatian National Guard, participated in the event, led by Božinović and Anušić. Božinović emphasized that the foundation of the Croatian state was laid here, highlighting the duty of future generations to honor those who gave their lives for the country. He stated that the aggressors sought to deprive Croats of their right to self-rule, but the resistance proved that the nation would not yield. He urged young people to understand that these sacrifices built the independent and free Croatia they live in today. Anušić spoke of the bravery of the defenders, noting that they were poorly armed and outnumbered but refused to surrender. He recalled how units of the 51st Motorized Brigade of the Yugoslav People's Army, supported by territorial defense units, launched the attack. Despite being outnumbered, the defenders resisted until a tank shell struck the police station, leading to its complete destruction. In the ensuing battle, 39 Croatian defenders lost their lives, including 20 police officers, 15 members of the Croatian National Guard, and four members of the Civil Protection Service. The event also included the premiere of a documentary-animated film titled Mupovci Dalj, directed by Milo Ostović and written by Marijan Gubina, author of the novel 260 Days. The film explores the suffering endured in Serbian concentration camps and draws parallels to the events in Dalj. During the premiere, a procession of 39 motorcycle riders carried the flags of the fallen police officers, members of the Croatian National Guard, and Civil Protection Service to the IT Park in Osijek, where they were received by police, armed forces, and civil protection personnel. This year’s commemorations also featured the annual Memorial Race Dalj '91, in which police officers, soldiers, and civil protection workers ran carrying flags bearing the likenesses of the fallen defenders. The race serves as both a tribute and a symbol of continuity, linking past sacrifices to present-day service. As the anniversary approaches, preparations are underway for the main commemorative event on August 1, starting at 9 a.m. at the Police Station in Dalj, where wreaths will be laid and candles will be lit at the memorial site. The event aims to reaffirm the enduring legacy of those who fought for Croatia’s independence and freedom.
