Suša in zgodovinsko nizke vode so blokirale evropske rečne poti.

European rivers have reached historic low water levels due to severe droughts, disrupting critical inland waterway transportation networks and threatening economic stability across the continent. The situation has escalated over the past weeks, with major rivers such as the Rhine, Danube, and others becoming too shallow for commercial vessels to navigate safely. This has led to reduced cargo capacity, stranded ships, and increased costs for freight operators. The impact extends beyond logistics, affecting energy production, agriculture, and tourism, with potential ripple effects felt even in Croatia. The crisis was triggered by prolonged heatwaves and a lack of rainfall, which have significantly lowered river levels. In Germany, for example, the Rhine River, once a vital artery for transporting goods such as coal, iron ore, and chemicals, has become so shallow that many barges can only carry 20 to 40 percent of their usual load. Some sections of the river have been completely impassable, forcing ships to remain moored until conditions improve. According to engineers and industry experts, this has already caused a sharp rise in shipping costs, as more vessels are required to move the same volume of cargo. On the Danube, similar challenges have emerged, particularly in Serbia and Croatia, where sediment buildup and low water levels have created hazardous navigation zones. In some cases, entire fleets have had to be diverted or delayed, causing disruptions in supply chains. The consequences of these disruptions extend far beyond immediate logistical issues. In countries heavily reliant on inland waterways, such as Germany, the loss of efficient transport routes has led to delays in raw material deliveries, impacting manufacturing sectors. For instance, German steel mills and chemical plants have faced shortages of essential inputs, leading to temporary halts in production. The economic cost of these interruptions is estimated to run into billions of euros annually. In 2018, during a similarly severe drought, Germany and the Netherlands alone suffered losses exceeding €2.7 billion due to disrupted trade flows and reduced industrial output. Industry analysts warn that the current situation could mirror or even exceed those figures, depending on how long the drought persists. In Croatia, the effects of the water crisis are beginning to take shape, though they remain less pronounced than in other parts of Europe. The country’s reliance on the Danube and smaller rivers such as the Sava, Drava, and Kupa means that its inland waterway network is relatively limited compared to larger European nations. However, the Danube plays a crucial role in connecting Croatia to the broader pan-European transport system. With water levels in the Danube dropping to historically low levels in Croatian waters, freight operations have been severely constrained. Cargo ships must either reduce their loads or wait for higher water levels before proceeding, resulting in slower transit times and increased operational costs. The port city of Vukovar, which depends heavily on the navigability of the Danube, is among the hardest-hit areas. Local officials and transport experts describe the situation as “critical,” noting that the disruption threatens both local industries and regional trade links. The implications for Croatia go beyond direct economic losses. The country's agricultural sector, which relies heavily on irrigation from river systems, is facing declining crop yields due to lower water availability. Farmers in eastern Slavonia, for example, are reporting reduced harvests of corn, a key staple crop. Additionally, the quality of drinking water in several cities is deteriorating as groundwater levels fall, raising concerns about public health. The fishing industry is also suffering, as lower water levels and warmer temperatures have depleted fish stocks. Meanwhile, the river cruise industry, a growing part of Croatia’s tourism sector, is experiencing significant setbacks. While cruises have not entirely ceased operation, many have had to alter their routes or cancel departures altogether, leading to substantial revenue losses. The broader economic ramifications of the drought are expected to unfold gradually. As the situation worsens, the cost of importing raw materials and finished goods is likely to increase, placing additional pressure on Croatian businesses and consumers. If German and Austrian industries face prolonged supply chain bottlenecks, the knock-on effect will be felt across the region. Moreover, the decline in river-based tourism and recreational activities could further strain local economies, especially in rural areas dependent on seasonal income. Experts caution that while the immediate financial impact may not yet be fully visible, the long-term consequences of the drought could be profound, particularly if climate patterns continue to shift toward more frequent and intense dry periods.

Zakaj dejstva (85): The article accurately describes the impact of low water levels on European river shipping routes, citing specific rivers like the Rhine and Danube. It references the causes such as heatwaves and lack of rainfall, aligning with cross-source consensus on drought effects. The mention of economic impac

Zakaj objektivnost (70): The article presents the situation in a generally neutral tone but uses emotionally charged language such as 'blokirali' (blocked) and 'teška situacija' (difficult situation), which may influence reader perception. It also emphasizes the negative economic consequences without balancing with potentia

Evropa v hudih težavah zaradi nizkih vodnih stopenj
