On August 29, 2026, in Celje, Slovenia, Primož Markovič, a student from Bežigrad High School, secured a silver medal at the 20th Central European Mathematical Olympiad (MEMO 2026). The competition, held over several days, saw six Slovenian participants compete against teams from across Europe. Markovič achieved 26 out of the maximum 32 points available, earning him the second-place finish among his countrymen. The final ceremony took place at the National House in Celje, where medals were awarded to the top performers. Six gold medals were given to students who scored all 32 or 31 points, while 13 silver and 13 bronze medals were distributed among other competitors. Markovič’s score of 26 placed him among the highest achievers in Slovenia, with fellow students Bart Cimperšek from Škofja Loka Classical Gymnasium, Gabriel Pagliaruzzi from Maribor's Second Gymnasium, and Jernej Starčič from Bežigrad High School also receiving recognition for their performances. In the team competition, Czech Republic claimed gold, Poland earned silver, and Germany took bronze. The problems presented during the Olympiad covered four main areas: algebra, combinatorics, geometry, and number theory. Contestants were encouraged to apply theoretical knowledge to arrive at practical and innovative solutions. Markovič described his experience at the Olympiad as both challenging and rewarding. “I prepared mostly at home, and on Fridays after school I practiced at the university,” he said. “I tried to enjoy the competition, meet new people, and didn’t put too much pressure on my results.” His approach reflected a balance between dedication and personal enjoyment, which many young competitors strive to achieve. Cimperšek shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the satisfaction that comes from solving complex problems. “The best part was when, after long thinking, you finally reach the solution,” he said. “Sometimes it’s fun even with difficult tasks.” His comments highlighted the emotional and intellectual rewards of participating in such high-level competitions. Luka Horjak, president of this year’s organizing committee, delivered a speech acknowledging the achievements of all participants. He praised those who performed well but also emphasized the importance of effort and learning from mistakes. “For others who might not have reached their goals, it’s crucial to remember whether they gave their best,” he said. “Even if things didn’t go perfectly, there is always something to learn. While our successes often define us, our failures and how we handle them can have a longer-term impact. I want to congratulate everyone, whether they won or not, for having the opportunity to grow, improve, and become better mathematicians.” The MEMO 2026 served as preparation for the 68th International Mathematical Olympiad, scheduled to take place in Hungary the following year. For many young mathematicians, these competitions represent a stepping stone toward international recognition and further academic pursuits. The event in Celje not only showcased talent but also reinforced the value of perseverance, creativity, and collaboration in mathematical problem-solving.
