It was assigned catalog number 506 and remained in the library's holdings until it mysteriously disappeared shortly after the library opened in 1872. According to library director Michelle Hudson, the book likely went missing several years after the library’s founding. At the time, strict borrowing rules required proof of literacy for borrowers and limited families to lending no more than three books, provided they had at least six members who could read. These rules have since changed, with modern libraries no longer requiring such documentation. Simmons, the homeowner, believes his ancestor John Simmons, who lived in the house around the time the book would have been borrowed, might have taken it. He estimates that the book could have been lost during a period when the family was still living in the area, though he admits there is little evidence to support this theory. “I think so,” he said. “There were probably too many children for him to take care of.” The book’s return has prompted a renewed interest in the library’s early history.
