A reward of £20,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 2019. The call for new evidence comes nearly five years after the fatal shooting during civil unrest in the Creggan area. Lyra McKee, 29, was killed on April 18, 2019, when she was struck by a bullet while standing near police vehicles during disturbances. Her death occurred amid heightened tensions in the city, with protests and clashes between groups. McKee, a freelance journalist known for her coverage of local issues, was caught in the crossfire of the violence. Three men were previously tried for her murder under a joint enterprise charge. Paul McIntyre, 58, of Kells Walk in Derry; Peter Cavanagh, 38, of Mary Street; and Jordan Gareth Devine, 25, of Bishop Street, were acquitted in the case. Despite their acquittal, no individual has yet been formally charged with pulling the trigger in the attack. The prosecution argued that the trio shared responsibility for the crime, but the court ruled otherwise. Following the trial, McKee's sister, Nichola Corner, expressed frustration over the lack of progress in solving the case. She criticized the prevailing "culture of silence" in Northern Ireland, which she claimed discouraged witnesses from coming forward with critical information. Corner emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, stating that the community must move beyond fear and secrecy. On Friday, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) launched a renewed appeal for information, backed by the independent charity Crimestoppers. The organization is offering a reward of up to £20,000 (approximately €23,400) for tips that result in the identification and conviction of the perpetrator. This marks the latest effort by authorities to secure justice for McKee and her family. Detective Chief Inspector Hazel Miller, representing the PSNI, reiterated the importance of public cooperation. She acknowledged the emotional toll on McKee's loved ones, describing how the loss has affected their lives daily. "They deserve answers," Miller stated, urging anyone with relevant information to step forward. "Your information, however small or unimportant it may seem, could be the missing piece that helps us deliver justice." Miller also highlighted the changing nature of personal circumstances and relationships, suggesting that some individuals who might have hesitated before may now feel more comfortable sharing details. She encouraged the public to consider the potential impact of their actions, emphasizing that even seemingly minor contributions could lead to significant outcomes. The PSNI has set up multiple channels for reporting information, including an anonymous option through Crimestoppers. Individuals can contact the charity via phone at 0800 555 111 or visit its website at crimestoppers-uk.org. Alternatively, they can reach out directly to the PSNI through its online portal at psni.police.uk/report or by calling 101.
