In recent weeks, wet and stormy weather has posed a serious threat to the health of tomato plants across Slovenia, with the risk of late blight, a fungal disease known scientifically as Phytophthora infestans, spreading rapidly under these conditions. The disease, which affects both potatoes and tomatoes, thrives in high humidity and temperatures ranging from 18 to 24 degrees Celsius. These conditions have become increasingly common this summer, creating an environment ripe for infection. In just a few days, entire crops can suffer severe damage, making early prevention crucial. The current growing season has been marked by unusually high temperatures, frequent rainfalls, and prolonged periods of moisture, all contributing to the heightened risk of late blight. This situation is further complicated by the presence of potato plants nearby, whose infected vines can serve as a reservoir for the pathogen. Once the fungus takes hold, it spreads quickly through the air and via contaminated tools or hands, making containment efforts more difficult once symptoms appear. Early detection and proactive measures are therefore essential to minimize losses. Late blight manifests itself through distinct signs on the leaves of affected plants. Initially, small greyish lesions appear on the upper surface of the foliage, while a silvery coating develops on the underside. As the disease progresses, these spots expand into larger patches, eventually causing the entire leaf to wilt and die. The infection can spread to stems and fruits, resulting in soft, rotting tissue that becomes unpalatable. Infected plants often exhibit a characteristic drooping appearance, with leaves turning yellow and falling off. To combat this threat, experts recommend several preventive strategies. First, protecting the plants from excessive rainfall is vital. This can be achieved by using raised beds or containers placed beneath sheltered areas, ensuring that water does not accumulate around the base of the plants. Good air circulation is equally important, which means spacing plants appropriately and avoiding overcrowding. Regular watering should focus on the soil rather than the foliage to reduce moisture levels on the leaves. Additionally, removing infected leaves promptly helps prevent the spread of the disease. Some tomato varieties show greater resistance to late blight than others. Varieties such as Phantasia, Phylovita, Phylona, Arletta, Fourstar, Maestria, and Naram have demonstrated increased tolerance to the disease. Generally, cherry tomatoes tend to fare better than beefsteak types, though this is not absolute. Canned or preserved tomatoes also benefit from their stronger root systems and higher nutrient content, giving them an advantage in resisting infections. For gardeners already dealing with outbreaks, immediate action is necessary. Applying fungicides, either commercial or homemade, can help control the spread of the disease. However, these treatments are most effective when applied before symptoms appear. If the infection has already taken hold, it is advisable to remove and destroy affected plants to prevent further contamination. In severe cases, replanting with resistant varieties may be the best course of action. As the weather continues to remain unpredictable, vigilance among growers remains critical. With proper care and timely intervention, the impact of late blight can be significantly reduced, safeguarding the future of tomato cultivation in Slovenia.
