The fastest song in the analysis, Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”, has been identified as the most dangerous track to listen to while driving due to its high tempo. With a beats per minute (BPM) rate of 192, the song significantly exceeds the threshold of 120 BPM, beyond which faster music is associated with more aggressive driving, higher speeds, and increased likelihood of errors at the wheel. This finding comes from an analysis conducted by the American law firm Trujillo Gonzalez, specializing in traffic accident cases. The firm examined 30 popular Spotify playlists designed for driving and road trips, identifying 50 songs that frequently appear on these lists. These tracks were compared based on their tempo to assess potential risks. “Shape of You” was found to be a common presence on nearly all analyzed playlists, appearing on 24 out of the 30 lists. On Spotify alone, the track has over five billion streams, highlighting its widespread popularity among drivers. It ranks first in the study for its potentially hazardous effect on safe driving habits. Other tracks that made the top ten include Oasis’ “Wonderwall” at 173 BPM and The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber’s “STAY” at 169 BPM. Additional entries include Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell,” Blondie’s “One Way or Another,” Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” Outkast’s “Hey Ya!”, Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside,” and Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven.” The research suggests that fast-paced music can influence driving behavior through a phenomenon known as rhythmic entrainment, where listeners unconsciously synchronize their movements and actions with the rhythm they hear. Faster tempos may heighten arousal levels, accelerate reaction times, and affect how quickly individuals drive or make sudden decisions behind the wheel. As such, the researchers recommend a tempo range of 60 to 100 BPM for safer driving conditions. However, this recommendation should be considered alongside the broader context of musical preferences and individual listening habits. It is important to note that the analysis focused solely on the 50 most commonly played songs from mainstream Spotify playlists, rather than encompassing the entire spectrum of music listened to while driving. Therefore, genres such as heavy metal, punk, and electronic music, often featuring even faster tempos, are not included in the final rankings. While these genres may pose additional risks, they were not part of the dataset used for comparison. Despite the findings, there is no need to remove Ed Sheeran or Queen from one's car stereo. The study does not advocate for complete avoidance of certain artists or genres but instead encourages awareness of how music might subtly influence driving behavior. If someone notices themselves instinctively pressing the accelerator harder or making quicker decisions in sync with the beat of a familiar tune, it could be worth checking the speedometer. The implications of this research extend beyond personal habit, offering insights into how auditory stimuli can impact motor skills and decision-making during critical moments on the road. Future studies may explore the effects of different types of music on various demographics, including age groups and driving experience levels. For now, the key takeaway is that while some songs may carry greater risk, the overall responsibility for safe driving lies with the driver.
