National Security Advisor Ajit Doval arrived in Riyadh on July 20 and engaged in high-level discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. The talks focused on enhancing energy security and protecting critical maritime corridors in West Asia. Doval was greeted upon arrival by Saudi Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Saud Al-Sati and India’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Suhel Khan. This marks Doval’s third visit to the Kingdom within the current year, underscoring the growing importance of India-Saudi strategic cooperation amid rising regional tensions. The meeting took place in Riyadh on Monday, according to the Saudi Foreign Ministry, which confirmed the discussions covered bilateral relations and strategies to deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations. Both sides evaluated recent developments in the region and explored collaborative initiatives aimed at bolstering energy security and safeguarding maritime trade routes. The session included participation from Saud Al-Sati, who plays a pivotal role in shaping Saudi Arabia’s political strategy. Regional dynamics have grown increasingly volatile due to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, which has already disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Adding to these concerns, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels declared a “maritime embargo” targeting Saudi vessels in the Bab al-Mandab Strait. They claimed this action was in response to what they describe as Saudi Arabia’s blockade of ports and airports in regions under their control. Saudi authorities dismissed the allegations, asserting their commitment to defending their ships in compliance with international legal frameworks. These developments have intensified anxieties regarding the stability of crucial global shipping lanes. With traffic through the Strait of Hormuz already affected by the U.S.-Iran standoff, the potential for further disruption raises serious questions about the reliability of energy supply chains. India, heavily reliant on Middle Eastern oil imports, has shown increasing interest in securing alternative routes and diversifying its energy partnerships to mitigate risks posed by geopolitical volatility. Doval’s previous visits to Saudi Arabia occurred in February and April, during which he met with Prince Faisal, Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, and Saudi National Security Advisor Musaed bin Mohammed Al Aiban. These engagements reflect a broader trend of India deepening its diplomatic ties with Gulf states. Given the sizeable Indian expatriate population, approximately 2.6 million individuals residing and working in Saudi Arabia, the country has a vested interest in maintaining stable relations with its neighbors. India and Saudi Arabia maintain robust energy and economic connections, with the latter being one of India’s principal suppliers of crude oil. As regional instability persists, New Delhi continues to prioritize safeguarding energy supplies, securing essential sea lanes, and ensuring the safety of Indian citizens and mariners operating in the area. The current visit by Doval aligns with these objectives, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue and collaboration between the two nations to address shared challenges.
