More than 72,000 migrants entered Spain’s northern African enclave of Ceuta last week, according to Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska. He confirmed this during a press conference following an emergency videoconference with European Union interior ministers, which was convened after the surge in arrivals. Of these individuals, 70,000 have already left Spain, returning to Morocco, he stated. This revised figure supersedes earlier reports that had estimated around 50,000 unauthorized entries into Ceuta. Grande-Marlaska emphasized that the Schengen area, the passport-free zone shared by most EU countries, was not compromised during the influx. In response to criticism from several European leaders regarding the situation in Ceuta, he asserted that the Schengen space faced no threat whatsoever, even in the smallest degree. He noted that Frontex, the EU border control agency, had also confirmed that the Schengen area remained secure throughout the crisis. The minister expressed confusion over Italy's decision to suspend its implementation of the Schengen system with Spain. He described the move as entirely unnecessary and disproportionate, citing the special regime applicable to Ceuta since 1991. Under this arrangement, no one can leave the Spanish enclave without passing through controlled borders. Grande-Marlaska added that the EU interior ministers acknowledged Spain’s efforts in managing the crisis during their meeting. During the emergency videoconference, EU interior ministers stressed the importance of combating human trafficking networks and strengthening external borders. The meeting, held in light of the migration crisis in Ceuta, saw the EU reaffirm solidarity with Spain. Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner stated that the EU successfully passed a test concerning border security and resilience against disinformation in handling the migrant flow in Ceuta. He noted that more than 70,000 people crossed the border within just a few hours last week, driven by criminal networks and misinformation spread on social media. The Irish presidency of the Council of the EU highlighted the unity among member states and their readiness to support Spain while protecting EU external borders from illegal migrations. It emphasized that external borders are a shared responsibility and that migration requires a unified European response. The ministers praised Spain’s swift and effective response to the situation in Ceuta and welcomed the collaboration between EU institutions and national authorities. The participants of the videoconference agreed on the need to continue fighting human trafficking networks, accelerate returns of individuals without the right to stay, strengthen border protection, and deepen partnerships with third countries. They focused particularly on improving joint oversight of events along migration routes. Possible measures included further development of early warning systems, gathering information on activities before EU borders, and monitoring social media platforms to detect potential mass movements quickly. They also underscored the importance of cooperation with origin and transit countries. The EU aims to develop partnerships that provide people with more opportunities in their home environments while improving migration management and return procedures. According to the latest assessments by Spanish authorities and the European Commission, most of those who illegally crossed the border have been returned. No signs were detected of their further movement toward mainland Spain or other EU member states. The ministers emphasized the need for better coordination of communication between EU member states and institutions during crises, ensuring timely exchange of information and uniform messages to the public to prevent the spread of disinformation and foreign manipulation. Irish Justice Minister, Interior Affairs, and Migration Minister Jim O’Callaghan, who called the videoconference, stated that the EU is united and ready to support Spain. The meeting allowed member states to assess existing tools, identify areas requiring closer cooperation, and continue preparations ahead of the next ministerial meeting and the October session of the European Council.

Zakaj dejstva (85): This article provides specific numbers from official sources (ministerial statements, AFP/Ansa reports) and aligns with cross-source consensus on the scale of the influx and return of migrants. It cites Frontex and EU officials, supporting factual consistency.

Zakaj objektivnost (75): While informative, the article frames the situation as a challenge to Schengen, which may subtly favor Spain’s position. It also mentions criticism of Italy, which introduces a slight bias.

Zakaj dejstva (80): The article includes figures from official sources and reports from agencies like AFP. It references EU responses and the number of returned migrants, aligning with other articles. However, it uses phrases like 'napad na špansko ozemlje,' which may overstate the intent of the migrants.

Zakaj objektivnost (70): The language used ('napad') implies a deliberate attack, which is emotionally charged and potentially biased. This affects objectivity despite factual alignment.

Notranji ministri EU obrnili ploščo glede Ceute.

Ministri EU so pohvalili špansko ravnanje s krizo in poudarili pomen varnosti meja in boja proti dezinformacijam.

Zakaj dejstva (80): The article references the number of migrants entering Ceuta (between 50,000 and 60,000) and discusses the broader implications for EU migration policy. It cites European Commission statements and mentions the lack of unified response among EU states, which aligns with other reports.

Zakaj objektivnost (65): The tone is critical of the EU’s fragmented response and highlights ideological divides. This framing suggests a preference for a unified approach, subtly favoring a particular political stance.
