Lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, representing Nnamdi Kanu, has warned of legal action against Chigozie Nnabugwu, a man from Imo State who publicly urged the Nigerian government to kill Kanu as a solution to restoring peace in the South-east. The legal team of Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), issued the warning after Nnabugwu appeared on News Central TV and claimed that Kanu's death was necessary for normalcy to return to the region. Kanu, currently imprisoned in Sokoto for terrorism-related charges, is appealing his conviction in the Court of Appeal in Abuja. Nnabugwu, during his appearance on the TV show, stated that security in the South-east had improved since Kanu and another separatist agitator, Simon Ekpa, were arrested and convicted. He argued that the federal government should take lethal action against Kanu to ensure stability. His remarks sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many calling his suggestion reckless and dangerous. Ejimakor, who shared a video clip of the interview on his X account, accused Nnabugwu of advocating for extrajudicial killing and violating the Cybercrimes Act (2024). He emphasized that such statements could lead to severe penalties, including fines or imprisonment. Ejimakor criticized News Central TV for broadcasting the controversial remarks without sufficient safeguards. He alleged that the station had breached broadcast regulations by allowing inflammatory content that could incite violence or disrupt public order. The lawyer warned that the network might face regulatory consequences for failing to uphold standards regarding incitement and public safety. He further pointed out that Nnabugwu’s call for Kanu’s execution while legal proceedings are ongoing constitutes interference with the judicial process and could amount to contempt of court. The legal team has formally requested that Nnabugwu issue a public retraction of his statement and that News Central TV provide an unconditional televised apology for airing the content. Ejimakor indicated that if these demands are not met, the team will pursue legal recourse. He stressed that the remarks not only violate laws but also risk undermining the rule of law and public tranquility. The case highlights the tensions surrounding the ongoing legal battle involving Kanu and the broader political and social implications of his activism. Kanu, who has been incarcerated since November 2023, continues to challenge his conviction through the Court of Appeal. His legal team argues that his arrest and sentencing have been politically motivated, given his role in the IPOB movement, which seeks the separation of the South-east and South-south regions from Nigeria. The group has been associated with several violent incidents, though the exact nature and extent of its involvement remain disputed. The controversy over Kanu’s case reflects the complex interplay between law enforcement, political dissent, and regional aspirations within Nigeria. The incident involving Nnabugwu underscores the polarized views around Kanu and the challenges faced by individuals who advocate for secessionist causes. While some see Kanu as a symbol of resistance, others view his actions as threats to national unity. The legal team’s response demonstrates the high stakes involved in cases that intersect with both legal processes and public discourse. As the situation unfolds, the focus will likely shift toward how the judiciary handles such sensitive matters and whether the media plays a constructive or provocative role in shaping public perception. The outcome of this dispute may influence future discussions on free speech, legal accountability, and the balance between security and civil liberties in Nigeria.

Ocena pristranskosti (Sredina): V članku sta predstavljena oba stališča - kontroverzni poziv Nnabugwuja k usmrtitvi in obsodba Kanujeve pravne ekipe - brez očitnega naklonjenosti katerikoli strani.
