The transformation was officially unveiled on Wednesday, July 22, after years of debate and a costly renovation costing the Austrian government approximately €20 million. The building, located in a commercial street near the border with Germany, had been state-owned since 2017 and had long been a point of contention over its future. A panel of experts had ruled against its demolition, opting instead for a dramatic redesign to make it less appealing as a gathering place for neo-Nazi groups. The renovation, carried out by an Austrian architecture firm, began in 2023 and has resulted in a complete overhaul of the structure. The building’s facade, once marked by a distinctive yellow paint, has been replaced with a neutral white surface. A new entrance features the insignia of the Austrian police force, while a commemorative stone on the sidewalk bears the inscription: “For peace, freedom and democracy. Never again fascism. Millions of deaths remind us.” This message reflects the broader intent behind the transformation, to distance the site from its historical associations and promote democratic values. Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner emphasized during the inauguration ceremony that the new space would serve as “a place of democracy and the rule of law,” though he acknowledged that the past could not be erased. The mayor of Braunau, Johannes Waidbacher, echoed this sentiment, noting that achieving consensus on such matters is rarely possible. He pointed to the lengthy discussions that preceded the decision, which had divided public opinion and sparked controversy among historians and activists. The new police station will house around 50 officers and will also function as a training center. Officials hope this dual purpose will help resolve a long-standing issue for Austria, which has often faced criticism for its delayed recognition of its role in the Holocaust. During World War II, approximately 65,000 Jews were murdered in Austria, and another 130,000 were forced into exile. The country has struggled with reconciling its history, particularly regarding its collaboration with Nazi policies. To prevent the site from becoming a tourist attraction or a symbol for extremist groups, the materials left over from the renovations have been crushed and disposed of at an undisclosed location. This measure aims to ensure that remnants of the building, such as old bricks or decorative elements, do not fall into the hands of collectors interested in Nazi memorabilia. The effort underscores the government’s commitment to erasing physical traces of the past that might be exploited for ideological purposes. The event drew a hundred attendees, including several dozen police officers stationed outside the building. While some residents and local officials support the move as a necessary step toward confronting the nation’s history, others argue that the approach risks oversimplifying complex historical narratives.
