The building, once a private residence and later the headquarters of a disability charity, was acquired by the Austrian government in 2017 and officially repurposed as a police station in 2019. The decision followed years of discussions aimed at addressing concerns over the site's potential misuse by extremist groups. The structure, located near the Austrian-German border, had long been a quiet relic of the past. Before its conversion, it housed a charitable organization focused on supporting individuals with disabilities. However, the building's historical significance as the birthplace of Adolf Hitler made it a point of contention among local officials and activists. Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, in a rented apartment within the building, spending his earliest weeks there before his family relocated to Passau in southern Germany. Despite its historical weight, the building lacked overt references to Hitler until recently. A small stone from the Mauthausen concentration camp, bearing the inscription "Never again fascism," stood on the sidewalk outside. This artifact served as a subtle reminder of the atrocities committed under the Nazi regime, though no direct acknowledgment of Hitler's role was present. After the renovation, the facade was painted white, and a simple sign reading "Police" now marks the entrance. Stephan Mlczoch, head of the Austrian interior ministry’s history department, explained that the transformation was intended to sever any symbolic link to Hitler. "The aim of the conversion was to prevent any association with Adolf Hitler, so as to strip it of that mystique," he stated. Under the Nazi regime, the site was repurposed as an art museum, reinforcing the regime's efforts to cultivate a cult of personality around Hitler. Today, the presence of the Austrian federal police stands in stark contrast to that era, symbolizing a commitment to democratic values and the rule of law. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner emphasized this shift during the official opening ceremony, stating that the police represent the antithesis of the ideology once associated with the building. Local officials noted that while there were previously isolated incidents involving visitors, the frequency has decreased over time. They declined to specify the nature of these incidents, citing privacy considerations. In Austria, performing the Hitler salute or displaying symbols linked to the Nazi Party is illegal under the Prohibition Act and carries legal consequences. Despite these measures, some critics argue that the conversion does not sufficiently address the legacy of Hitler's actions. Mayor Johannes Waidbacher acknowledged public acceptance of the project, stating, "I think on the whole the people of Braunau have accepted it and can live with it." He also expressed cautious optimism, noting that the success of the initiative will become clear over time. Austrian Holocaust survivors' organizations, such as the Mauthausen Committee, voiced reservations about the change. Robert Eiter, a representative of the group, criticized the decision, suggesting that a police station fails to adequately highlight the crimes committed by Hitler and his regime. He pointed out that annual ceremonies at the Mauthausen concentration camp emphasize the need to remember the past, while the new status of the building in Braunau risks fostering a culture of forgetting. Eiter argued that even with the police presence, neo-Nazis might still find ways to visit the site, underscoring the ongoing challenge of confronting historical trauma.
