Ali priljubljena keto prehrana povzroča raka?

Nova študija, objavljena v reviji Nature, izpodbija splošno prepričanje, da ima ketogena prehrana jasne protirakovinske učinke. Raziskovalci z MIT-ja so pregledali miši, ki so nagnjene k razvoju črevesnih tumorjev, in primerjali učinke različnih diet - standardnih, z visoko vsebnostjo maščob in ketogenih. Rezultati so bili nepričakovani: medtem ko je ketogena prehrana zmanjšala pojav tumorjev v debelega črevesa, je bila povezana z večimi tumorji v tankem črevesju.

A new study published in Nature has raised questions about the potential risks of the ketogenic diet, revealing unexpected effects on tumor growth in mice. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) conducted experiments using mice prone to developing intestinal tumors, comparing the impact of different diets, standard, high-fat, and ketogenic. The findings suggest that while the ketogenic diet reduced tumor formation in the colon, it was linked to increased tumor occurrence in the small intestine. The research began with the hypothesis that reducing carbohydrates through the ketogenic diet might starve cancer cells, which often rely on glucose for energy. This theory gained traction due to the diet’s popularity for weight loss and blood sugar control. However, the results of the MIT-led study challenge this notion. In their experiment, the team observed divergent outcomes depending on the location within the digestive system. Mice fed a ketogenic diet showed fewer tumors in the large intestine but more in the small intestine compared to those on other diets. One of the key discoveries was that the primary drivers of these changes were not the ketone bodies, the molecules produced during ketosis, but rather how cells utilize dietary fats. Scientists found that breaking down fat for energy could activate proteins associated with enhanced activity of intestinal stem cells. While these cells aid tissue renewal, heightened activity can also increase the likelihood of tumor development. Omer Yilmaz, a biologist and pathologist at MIT, explained that the body's response to diet involves complex metabolic mechanisms. “We did not expect ketone bodies to merely act as passive observers in the process,” he noted, emphasizing the intricate interplay between diet and cellular function. The implications for humans remain unclear. While the study provides valuable insights into the biological mechanisms underlying diet-related cancer risk, experts caution against directly applying these findings to human populations. The model used in the study specifically included genetically predisposed mice, which does not reflect typical dietary habits in the general population. Moreover, the relationship between diet and cancer is influenced by numerous factors, including the type of tumor, affected organ, and individual metabolism. Despite these limitations, the study highlights the need for further investigation into how specific diets might influence cancer progression differently across organs. It also underscores the complexity of linking dietary patterns to health outcomes, suggesting that simplistic classifications such as “protective” or “harmful” may not fully capture the nuances of nutritional science. As researchers continue to explore the long-term effects of the ketogenic diet on both healthy individuals and those at risk for cancer, the findings serve as a reminder that dietary choices can have multifaceted impacts on health. For now, the focus remains on understanding the biological pathways that connect nutrition to disease, with the hope of informing more personalized approaches to dietary recommendations.
