Young people in India are taking to the streets in a wave of protests that has captured the attention of both domestic and international observers. The movement, led primarily by students and young activists, is centered around demands for educational reform, transparency, and accountability within the government. The protests, often referred to as the "Cockroach Movement," have gained momentum since late May, culminating in large-scale demonstrations that have spread across major cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. The trigger for the protests came in mid-May when the national medical school entrance exam, a critical gateway for aspiring doctors, was canceled due to the leakage of the question paper. This incident, which followed numerous similar breaches since 2014, sparked outrage among students and parents who see the exams as a key determinant of social mobility. The situation escalated further when India’s Chief Justice likened unemployed youth to "parasites" and "cockroaches," a metaphor that resonated deeply with the public and became a rallying cry for the movement. Social media users, especially younger demographics, began using the term "cockroach" in a humorous yet defiant manner, symbolizing resilience and collective action. Abhijeet Dipke, a recent graduate from Boston University, played a pivotal role in transforming the phrase into a powerful symbol of resistance. On May 30, he launched the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical political party modeled after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The CJP quickly gained traction, with thousands joining online and in person, demonstrating a level of grassroots support that has surprised even seasoned analysts. Despite government efforts to suppress the movement through internet shutdowns and police interventions, the protests continue to grow, fueled by widespread public sympathy and a shared sense of purpose. The movement has transcended traditional boundaries, drawing participants from diverse backgrounds, including different religions, castes, and age groups. This inclusivity has made the protests unique compared to similar movements in neighboring countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal, where youth-led uprisings have previously led to regime changes. In India, however, the focus remains on holding specific officials accountable rather than toppling the government outright. Protesters are demanding that the education minister resign and implement reforms to address systemic issues in the examination system. Local communities have also shown solidarity with the demonstrators, offering shelter, food, and logistical support through initiatives organized via delivery apps and social media platforms. This organic coordination highlights the adaptability of the movement and its ability to sustain itself despite government attempts to disrupt communication channels. The involvement of prominent figures such as authors Arundhati Roy and Geetanjali Shree has further amplified the movement’s message, framing it not merely as a protest but as a broader call for democratic accountability and ethical governance. As the protests enter their third week, the government faces mounting pressure to respond. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known for his reluctance to concede, the sustained nature of the demonstrations suggests that the movement could influence future policy decisions. Whether the protesters succeed in achieving their immediate goals, such as the resignation of the education minister, remains unclear. However, the Cockroach Movement has already succeeded in bringing national attention to long-standing grievances and has ignited a renewed conversation about the role of youth in shaping India’s political landscape.
