Mountain rescue teams in Slovenia have been overwhelmed with increasing numbers of interventions this year, according to reports from the Slovenian Mountain Rescue Association. On Tuesday alone, they responded to eight incidents, bringing their total number of operations since the start of the year to 448, 74 more than during the same period last year. The rise in mountain accidents has prompted warnings from rescuers about the dangers of overestimating personal capabilities and unfamiliarity with terrain. The increase in incidents is particularly notable in July, which saw 121 interventions compared to 98 in July of last year. Helicopter assistance played a key role in these operations, with 59 helicopter-based rescues recorded in July versus 34 in June of this year. This trend continues into August, with statistics indicating a slight rise in accidents compared to July, attributed largely to the growing number of visitors to the mountains. Rescuers highlighted that the majority of incidents involve hikers who either misjudge their physical and mental abilities or lack proper knowledge of the terrain. They emphasized that many areas within the Slovenian Alps are steep and challenging, leading to situations where hikers become stranded or experience fear due to exposure and difficulty. To avoid such scenarios, hikers are advised to choose trails that match their level of experience, skills, and physical preparedness. If venturing into unfamiliar or more demanding territory, they should consider hiring a licensed mountain guide. Another significant factor contributing to the increased number of interventions is the rising frequency of rockfalls and falling stones. Rescuers urged hikers to remain vigilant about the possibility of loose rocks, checking the stability of rocks before taking each step and walking cautiously. In case of potential rockfall or loosening of stone, they recommended immediately alerting people below to allow them to move away safely. In addition to these precautions, hikers are encouraged to begin their hikes early enough to avoid heat, allowing more time to resolve any complications and avoiding afternoon thunderstorms. Before setting off, they should familiarize themselves with possible escape routes in case of difficulties. Monitoring weather forecasts, tracking the condition of hiking trails, and heeding other alerts are also crucial. Selecting appropriate gear, ensuring hydration, and wearing warm, waterproof clothing and sun protection even in summer are considered essential measures for safety in high-altitude areas. The areas around Mount Triglav and the Triglav Lakes in the Julian Alps, as well as the Kamnik-Savinja Alps region, have seen the highest number of rescue operations. These regions continue to attract a large number of visitors, further increasing the demand on mountain rescue services. Despite the challenges, the association remains committed to providing support and guidance to ensure the safety of all hikers and visitors in the mountainous regions of Slovenia.
