EU spet na levi nogi: Kitajci naskakujejo še evropski trg luksuznih vozil
Članek obravnava naraščajoči vpliv Kitajske na evropskem trgu luksuznih avtomobilov in poudarja pomisleke, izražene na avtomobilskem salonu v Parizu (12. oktobra 2018). kitajski avtomobilski proizvajalci dokazujejo, zakaj obstoječi ukrepi EU za trgovinsko zaščito morda niso zadostni za zaščito evropske avtomobilske industrije.
The Paris Motor Show has exposed a critical challenge for Europe's automotive industry: traditional European automakers are struggling to compete with Chinese manufacturers offering affordable electric vehicles. The event highlighted both the resilience of European automakers and the growing threat posed by their Asian counterparts. While most major European brands attended the show, Japanese automakers such as Toyota were notably absent. Meanwhile, Chinese companies showcased models priced below €30,000, demonstrating their increasing competitiveness in the European market. European automakers face the challenge of producing cost-effective electric vehicles while maintaining profitability. This issue was underscored by Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume, who noted that European automakers would need to accept lower profit margins due to declining sales in markets like China. The shift in consumer demand away from European markets has forced automakers to rethink their strategies and focus on local production to reduce costs and increase efficiency. Chinese manufacturers have made significant inroads into the European market, particularly in the mid-range and luxury segments. For example, the XPeng G9L, a high-end electric SUV, will be available in France for around €75,000, significantly cheaper than its European competitors. This pricing strategy could impact demand for European models and subsequently affect production levels within European supply chains, including in Slovenia. The European Union’s attempts to protect its automotive industry through trade measures have been criticized as insufficient and too late. These policies include restrictions on Chinese hybrid vehicle imports, yet they fail to address the broader issues of industrial policy and the relocation of manufacturing to Asia. The situation has led to a decline in European automotive exports and a corresponding loss of revenue that once supported lower profit margins in Europe. Slovenian authorities recently abolished subsidies for Chinese electric and hybrid vehicles, recognizing their potential harm to the European and Slovenian automotive industries. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains questionable given the scale of Chinese competition. Chinese automakers are adopting strategic partnerships with European firms to gain access to distribution networks and avoid tariffs. For instance, Leapmotor formed a joint venture with Stellantis in 2023. Such collaborations allow Chinese companies to navigate regulatory hurdles while expanding their presence in Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of enhancing local development, productivity, battery production, and reducing dependence on foreign energy sources during his visit to the Paris Motor Show. His remarks reflect a broader European effort to strengthen its position against global competitors. Despite the challenges, European automakers continue to showcase innovative concepts and development ambitions at the Paris Motor Show. However, many of these projects lack clear pathways to mass production, indicating ongoing difficulties in translating innovation into commercial success. The return of single-occupant vehicles, such as Renault’s E-Space concept, suggests a renewed interest in practical and efficient vehicle designs. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, European automakers must find ways to remain competitive while addressing the economic and technological challenges posed by emerging players from Asia. The outcome of this struggle will shape the future of the European automotive industry.
