Disney’s ESPN division is implementing a major restructuring effort that includes cutting hundreds of jobs, primarily linked to the recent acquisition of NFL Network and related assets. According to internal communications and external reports, the layoffs are the result of ongoing integration efforts following the completion of the NFL Network purchase in April. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro confirmed in a memo to employees that the majority of these job losses are directly connected to the acquisition, which was finalized in early 2024 after being announced in August 2023. The deal also included the acquisition of NFL Fantasy and distribution rights to the RedZone channel, in exchange for a 10% equity stake in ESPN held by the National Football League. A source close to the situation revealed that Clark was initially scheduled to learn of the decision later that day, but the news leaked ahead of schedule. Clark took to social media to respond to the layoffs, expressing solidarity with those affected and sharing a workout video. He emphasized his belief that opportunities would open for those displaced. Another prominent figure leaving ESPN is Karl Ravech, who had been with the network since 1993 and was the lead voice of “Sunday Night Baseball” from 2022 to 2025. His role in baseball broadcasting was significant, and he had previously hosted “Baseball Tonight” and “SportsCenter.” Ravech called Monday night’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies, marking one of his final appearances before his departure. Tom Pelissero, an NFL insider who joined NFL Network in 2017 after covering the league for USA Today, is also reportedly among those laid off.
