The Metro de Medellín has restored its operations after overcoming a complex electrical failure that had partially paralyzed service earlier in the day. According to officials, 80 workers completed repairs on the overhead power lines, known as the catenary system, allowing the metro to resume full commercial service during peak hours. The manager of the Metro de Medellín, Tomás Elejalde, provided details about the work carried out from the Envigado station, confirming the return of normalcy to the transportation network. The disruption occurred due to a serious fault in the power supply system of Line A, which runs through the metropolitan area from north to south. This caused widespread tension and traffic congestion as thousands of commuters faced delays. After seven hours of intensive work, the damaged components were replaced with new ones, ensuring the safety of the system upon resuming operations. Elejalde emphasized the scale of the response required to address the issue. He stated that approximately 80 personnel were deployed across multiple fronts to repair the damage to the catenary system. “It took around seven hours of work with about 80 people deployed in different areas to fix this damage to the catenary,” he said, expressing satisfaction with the commitment shown by the workers who operated under pressure to restore movement along the region’s most critical mobility artery. During the period of disruption, authorities activated an emergency continuity plan involving public land transport. Integrated route buses and the metropolitan transport system adjusted their routes to assist passengers affected by the shutdown at stations in the southern part of the Valle de Aburrá. The union leader expressed gratitude to the affected users and acknowledged the support from transporters and authorities who coordinated the rerouting of services from impacted stations to the Poblado station, which temporarily served as a transfer hub. Despite the restoration of train services to full functionality, the administration of the Metro de Medellín is determined to investigate the root cause of the technical failure. To achieve this, the company announced a key partnership with regional academic institutions. In collaboration with the Pontificia Bolivariana University (UPB) and the University of Antioquia (UdeA), the Metro will conduct a detailed forensic analysis of the faulty components. Elejalde highlighted the importance of identifying the underlying cause of the malfunction. “We are deploying teams jointly with the universities, with the academic community, to detail a forensic investigation specifically to determine what failed. We still don’t have the root cause,” he noted, committing to share the findings of this metallurgical and materials study with the public once available. The incident underscores the need for continuous monitoring and improvement of infrastructure systems to prevent similar disruptions. While the immediate focus was on restoring service, the long-term goal involves understanding the factors that led to the failure. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the reliability and resilience of the metro system, ensuring smoother operations in the future. The investigation results will provide valuable insights into potential vulnerabilities and inform strategies for preventing such incidents.
