The operation was uncovered following a complaint filed by the City Safety Department of Antofagasta, leading to the arrest of both the provider and a client attempting to acquire a license illegally. The investigation revealed that the pair used a specially modified vest equipped with small cameras, a modem, and hidden communication devices to transmit exam questions and receive answers instantly. This method allowed them to bypass standard testing procedures, enabling clients to pass the theoretical portion of the licensing process without genuine knowledge. The service was advertised through social media platforms, targeting individuals seeking to obtain licenses quickly and without effort. According to General Cristian Montre Soto, head of the Carabineros zone in Antofagasta, the operation was identified after receiving information from municipal authorities. He stated that the suspect had been offering remote support via online channels, utilizing the modified vest to facilitate cheating. “This investigation began with a complaint from the city safety department,” Soto explained. “We detected an individual who was providing illegal assistance for passing the theoretical driving test using a specially adapted vest.” The accused service cost around 350,000 pesos per transaction, and law enforcement officials managed to apprehend both the supplier and the individual who paid for the fraudulent service. The arrests took place during a sting operation, allowing authorities to seize evidence related to the scheme. The case highlights the growing challenge of combating technological fraud in public examinations. Antofagasta Mayor Sacha Razmilic emphasized the severity of the situation, calling the actions “completely unacceptable.” He noted that each driver’s license represents a state certification of an individual’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. “We will not allow public trust to be undermined by such behavior,” he said. “As a municipality, we will participate in legal proceedings to hold responsible parties accountable and clarify all circumstances surrounding this investigation.” Razmilic added that the city will work closely with investigators to ensure the integrity of future licensing processes and prevent similar incidents. “We are committed to safeguarding these procedures and ensuring they remain fair and transparent,” he said.
