The two mounds, designated TRED30 and TRED31, stretch over 50 to 80 meters in length and reach heights of up to 1.8 meters. First identified in 1986, these mounds remain largely unexcavated due to their fragile condition and protected status. Researchers from the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) conducted a detailed survey in 2020 using electrical resistivity mapping, a non-invasive technique that measures how electricity flows through different materials underground. This method allows scientists to detect variations in soil composition, such as the presence of dense stone formations. During the survey, the team observed distinct resistance spikes in the central regions of both mounds. These readings corresponded with the electrical properties of granite blocks found in nearby dolmens, ancient megalithic tombs. The patterns suggested the possibility of stone clusters buried within the mounds. In TRED30, the resistance increased with depth, pointing to substantial stone structures located deep within the mound’s core. Conversely, TRED31 displayed signs of buried stone formations near the surface, with erosion having partially exposed the edge of one stone block, an observation previously overlooked. Based on prior excavations at other mounds in the cemetery, the researchers speculate that these structures might resemble rough, human-shaped standing stones. Such forms are reminiscent of Passy-type monuments found in other parts of France, where long earthen burial mounds concealed standing stones or other funerary elements. The team concluded that it is reasonable to assume that TRED30 and TRED31 are part of the Coëby cemetery's funerary complex. Despite the promising findings, the researchers emphasize that further investigation is necessary. A full excavation would be required to determine the exact layout and function of the buried structures. Until then, the mounds remain enigmatic, their secrets locked beneath layers of earth and time. The discovery adds to the growing body of knowledge about Neolithic burial traditions in Brittany. The region is home to numerous megalithic sites, including standing stones, passage graves, and dolmens, all of which provide valuable glimpses into early European societies.
