Duwaji, a 29-year-old Syrian-American artist raised in Texas and educated in Dubai, is attending a retreat titled "The Women’s Sanctuary," where she is listed as the "artist in residence." According to reports, the retreat, known as "Plants of the Quran," is a sold-out event that costs participants approximately $3,400. The program includes art exhibitions, botanical workshops, and sessions focused on spiritual reflection rooted in Islamic teachings. The retreat started on Wednesday and is set to conclude on Monday. Following this, Duwaji is scheduled to participate in another retreat in Corsica, France, titled "Mary in the Quran," which explores the significance of Mary in Islamic tradition. These events have been described as both spiritually enriching and commercially exclusive due to their steep price tags.

The timing of Duwaji’s trip has been particularly scrutinized given that it coincided with the Fourth of July, a day meant to celebrate American independence. While Mayor Mamdani was present in New York, delivering speeches that critiqued the current state of the nation, Duwaji was traveling abroad. On July 4th, Mamdani delivered a speech at New York City Hall that focused more on contemporary issues such as immigration policies, economic inequality, and the perceived dominance of corporations and wealthy elites. He referred to the United States as "an arena of supremacy" and criticized the actions of ICE agents, calling them "masked agents terrorizing our streets." Despite ending his speech with "God bless America," the tone was largely negative toward the country's current trajectory.

Critics have seized upon the contrast between Mamdani’s public critique of the nation and his wife’s absence from the celebrations. Arynne Wexler, a comedian and conservative commentator, highlighted the irony in a tweet, noting that while Mamdani urged New Yorkers to lower their air conditioners due to extreme heat, Duwaji was boarding a flight to Mallorca. Wexler shared images of Duwaji at the airport, obtained from a friend who was also on the same flight. The photos quickly circulated online, drawing further criticism from some city council members.

Queens Councilwoman Joann Ariola expressed disappointment, stating that "nothing says 'America 250' quite like skipping the celebration for a Mediterranean vacation." She added that Duwaji’s past criticisms of America were well-documented and that her absence seemed to reflect poorly on the city’s leadership. Similarly, Staten Island Councilman Frank Morano noted that while it is acceptable for officials' families to take vacations, the Fourth of July represented a crucial opportunity to demonstrate unity and patriotism. Both council members emphasized that the timing of the trip was problematic, especially given the symbolic nature of the occasion.

Despite the criticism, the Mamdani administration has maintained that Duwaji should not be held accountable for her personal views since she does not hold an official position within the government. Earlier this year, Duwaji issued an apology for some of her previous social media posts, which included controversial statements about American military actions and U.S. foreign policy. However, these comments had already resurfaced in the wake of her trip, reigniting discussions about her stance on national identity and foreign affairs.
