The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarms over the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which has surpassed 3,600 confirmed cases and resulted in over 1,500 fatalities. As of 30 July, the outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, has reached its worst levels yet, according to a situation update issued by the global health body. The outbreak, which initially started in the Mongbwalu Health Zone in Ituri Province, has now spread to five provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo, impacting 49 health zones. Despite these obstacles, the DRC government, along with the WHO and its partners, has ramped up surveillance, case management, contact tracing, and community engagement initiatives. However, the WHO has reiterated that additional resources are urgently needed to match the pace of the outbreak and prevent further escalation. In a separate development, Uganda has officially declared an end to its Bundibugyo virus outbreak following 42 consecutive days without a new locally transmitted case. The Ugandan Ministry of Health announced the decision on 28 July, after the last locally transmitted patient had been discharged on 16 June. The final imported case was discharged on 16 July after testing negative twice for the virus. While the country has moved to declare the outbreak over, the WHO cautioned that Uganda remains vulnerable to new infections due to the ongoing outbreak in the DRC. The organization recommended continued vigilance, including enhanced surveillance and preventive measures, particularly in border areas where population movement remains high. As the situation in the DRC worsens, Nigeria has taken proactive steps to prepare for potential viral importation. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has categorized the risk of Ebola entering the country as high, even though no confirmed cases have been reported so far. This assessment is based on the persistent transmission in the DRC and surrounding nations, coupled with international travel patterns and porous land borders. The NCDC has instructed states to bolster their surveillance systems and reinforce infection prevention strategies to mitigate the threat of an outbreak within Nigeria. The outbreak has placed immense pressure on local and international health agencies to coordinate effectively and allocate sufficient resources to manage the crisis. With the virus spreading across multiple provinces and showing signs of acceleration, the need for a unified and robust response has never been greater. The WHO continues to work closely with national authorities and partners to enhance preparedness and response capabilities across Africa, aiming to prevent further regional spread and reduce the impact of the outbreak.
