The Vifzack Academy took place for the third time this year, bringing together young researchers and scientists at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) in Klosterneuburg. Organized jointly by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and ISTA, the academy aims to nurture young talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (MINT) by offering insights into cutting-edge research and fostering dialogue between students and scientists. The event ran over a week, culminating in a ceremonial graduation ceremony on Friday, August 28, where participants received their Vifzack diplomas after engaging in a series of scientific activities. The academy focused on two main themes: neuroscience and space exploration. In the Neuroscience Bootcamp, students aged 11 to 14 engaged with researchers from ISTA, exploring topics such as brain function and modern methods used in neuroscientific studies. They had direct interactions with scientists who shared knowledge about current research and experimental techniques. This hands-on approach allowed the students to gain a deeper understanding of how neuroscience contributes to broader scientific inquiry. In parallel, the Space Bootcamp offered an immersive experience into astrophysics and space exploration. Participants learned about fundamental concepts in astronomy, spacecraft technology, and the capabilities of instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope. Equipped with this knowledge, they constructed model rockets capable of reaching heights of up to 100 meters. A new addition to this year's program was the Stargazing session, during which students observed celestial objects directly under the guidance of ISTA’s astrophysicists, reinforcing their learning through real-world observation. Beyond these bootcamps, the academy included additional scientific disciplines. In the BioLab, students explored microorganisms and their roles in biological systems. In the Computer Science & Robotics segment, they programmed robots using sensors and microcontrollers, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. The Math Bootcamp introduced mathematical concepts through interactive and playful methods, while the Invention Workshop encouraged creative problem-solving and innovation. Christian Bertsch, director of the VISTA Science Experience Center, emphasized the importance of interaction between students and researchers. He noted that engagement and trust develop through exchange and that the direct dialogue between participants and scientists is central to educational efforts within the Vifzack Week. The initiative seeks to make high-level research accessible to young minds, providing them with insight into the questions, processes, ideas, and individuals driving contemporary scientific advancements. The event attracted 75 students who spent the week immersed in various scientific disciplines, working alongside ISTA researchers. Their experiences ranged from constructing rockets to observing stars, all aimed at sparking curiosity and encouraging further interest in STEM fields. Families and friends joined the students for the final ceremony, celebrating the successful completion of a week filled with discoveries and learning opportunities. The Vifzack Academy continues to build upon its previous editions, expanding its scope and introducing new elements each year. With its focus on experiential learning and direct engagement with leading scientists, the program offers a unique platform for young researchers to explore the frontiers of science and technology.
