A piece of bone discovered in Antarctica has been identified as the first dinosaur fossil ever found on the continent. The discovery was made by researchers at the British Antarctic Survey, who re-examined the specimen after it was found in a museum archive. Professor Paul Barrett from the Natural History Museum identified the bone based on unique features such as ball-and-socket joints and specific hollows and bumps. The find provides new insights into the prehistoric ecosystem of Antarctica during the Late Cretaceous period, around 82 million years ago, when the region was covered in forests and supported large herbivorous dinosaurs like the titanosaur.
