A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Friday, prompting residents to evacuate their homes due to the intensity of the tremors, according to the regional branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Geophysical Service. The quake occurred at 15:35 local time (05:35 Spanish peninsular time) at a depth of 135 kilometers, approximately 76 kilometers northeast of Ozernovskiy, located on the Kamchatka Peninsula, more than 6,000 kilometers from Moscow. The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which monitors seismic activity worldwide, confirmed the quake's magnitude and location. According to Russian news agency Tass, some residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of the region, evacuated their apartments due to the tremors. No material damage or casualties have been reported so far. Kamchatka covers an area of 270,000 square kilometers and has a population of just over 310,000 people, with two-thirds living in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The peninsula is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and features nearly 30 active volcanoes out of its total of almost 130, all listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1996. The region experiences frequent earthquakes due to its position along the edge of the North American tectonic plate, bordering the Eurasian and Pacific plates, and being close to the Philippine plate. According to another report, the epicenter was initially recorded at a depth of 143.2 kilometers, with coordinates at 52.01 degrees north latitude and 157.25 degrees east longitude, in southern Kamchatka. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported the same earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 and a depth of approximately 140 kilometers. Initial data indicate that the powerful earthquake was felt in a coastal town southwest of the peninsula, around 150 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, home to more than 180,000 people. Specialists expressed concern because the epicenter lies between the Opala and Ksudach volcanoes. The USGS estimated that in the nearest area, the earthquake was felt with intensity V, causing moderate movement that awakens people and causes small objects to fall. The region has experienced several earthquakes during October, although none of this magnitude. On October 3, there were 14 quakes measuring 4.0 or higher within 18 hours, with the largest reaching 5.8, according to the USGS. On Tuesday, October 6, there was a 6.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast, reported by the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The following day, on Wednesday, October 7, there was a 5.2 magnitude quake 79 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 56.8 kilometers. The last one occurred yesterday, measuring 5.5 at 203 kilometers southeast of the capital, at a depth of 60 kilometers. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations stated that the earthquake was not felt in populated areas and that there was no risk of a tsunami.
