The publication, released by the Rijeka Society of Architects (DAR), explores the complex interplay between Rijeka’s historical industrial past and its contemporary urban identity. It examines how the city has navigated physical and symbolic separation from the coast over time, particularly in light of recent infrastructure and economic changes. With the city undergoing significant transformations, the question of preserving, repurposing, and reopening the waterfront for public use has become increasingly urgent. The book emerged from a dialogue initiated late last year at a panel discussion held in the former Exportdrva building. Featuring essays, transcripts of dynamic discussions, and visions from contributing authors, the publication delves into the intricate relationship between the city and its coastal spaces. It offers guidance on transforming the Metropolis, once a key industrial hub, into an open space for social, cultural, and creative activities. One notable observation included in the text suggests that should sea levels rise, the challenges faced by the Metropolis could be resolved organically, with the possibility of a water tram replacing the current railway line along the route from Kantrida to Pećine.
