The initiative represents a significant shift in Marineland’s strategy following previous attempts to relocate its aquatic residents. Last year, the park sought to send its belugas and dolphins to an aquarium in China, but the request was denied by Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson. In response, Marineland issued a controversial threat to euthanize its belugas unless it received emergency funding, drawing widespread media attention and public scrutiny. Following the rejection of the Chinese proposal, Marineland entered into negotiations with a coalition of U.S. and Spanish aquariums, resulting in an agreement to distribute the remaining belugas and dolphins among five facilities. These include the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, SeaWorld locations in San Antonio and San Diego, and the Oceanografic Valencia in Spain. The U.S. parks involved are members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which played a key role in supporting Marineland through the logistical and financial challenges of the relocation. The process of moving the belugas involves specialized techniques designed to minimize stress and ensure their well-being. Each whale is guided into a designated pool where the water level is gradually reduced to a point where it just covers their bodies. They are then fitted with custom slings, which are used to lift them gently onto transport containers lined with soft materials and partially filled with water. These containers are secured within specially equipped trucks that form part of a convoy accompanied by police units and animal welfare representatives to provide immediate support should any issues arise. Burns explained that the decision to break down the relocation into smaller groups allows for closer monitoring and individualized care for each whale. The first batch of six belugas was scheduled to travel together on a short flight, ensuring a swift and controlled transition to their new habitats.
