The crumbling tower of Michalovice, located near Prague, has surpassed the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in terms of tilt, according to local officials. The structure, part of a ruined fortress, leans at an angle of approximately 7.315 degrees, making it potentially the world's most tilted bell tower. This revelation has sparked discussions within the town’s cultural authority about whether to pursue a Guinness World Records entry for the site. The discovery was made during recent geological surveys conducted by Milan Pruner, head of the Municipal Cultural Society of Mladá Boleslav. He noted that the tilt had increased since a previous measurement several months ago. While the Leaning Tower of Pisa tilts at around 4 degrees, the current record holder for the most tilted tower stands at roughly 5.5 degrees. However, this title remains unofficial, as the Czech site has yet to be formally recognized. A potential Guinness World Records entry would require a substantial investment, approximately 41,000 euros. Stadtrat Robin Povsik outlined the cost, emphasizing that such an endeavor might not be financially viable for the small industrial city of Mladá Boleslav. The town lacks the necessary infrastructure to support tourism, and creating a new visitor program would demand additional resources. Despite these challenges, the tilt of the tower has already attracted some interest. Local experts suggest that the leaning may have resulted from an explosion in the 18th century, when Emperor Ferdinand III ordered the demolition of unused castles, including the ruins of Michalovice. This theory contrasts with earlier folklore that claimed treasure hunters had caused the damage by digging beneath the structure. Tourism has begun to increase slightly around the site, though it remains far less popular than the Škoda Museum, which draws over 250,000 visitors annually. Only a few thousand tourists visit the area surrounding the ruin each year. Nevertheless, the unique feature of the tower has drawn attention, even from international visitors. One young woman from Mladá Boleslav recently invited her Italian friend to see the tower after they had both visited Pisa. Upon seeing the structure, the Italian visitor admitted she had been mistaken about its status as the world’s most tilted tower. “This one is really leaning,” she said, expressing a mix of admiration and slight disappointment. The situation highlights how historical sites can gain unexpected recognition through their physical characteristics. While the tower’s tilt may not immediately benefit the local economy, it has become a point of pride for residents. Whether the community will pursue formal recognition remains uncertain, pending further analysis of the costs versus potential benefits. For now, the tower continues to stand as a striking example of nature’s influence on human-made structures.
