BRIN, the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia, has launched an internship program aimed specifically at college students, marking a significant step towards integrating academic talent into the nation’s growing research and innovation landscape. The internship program was announced during a public lecture held at Malang State University in Malang, East Java, where BRIN’s head, Arif Satria, outlined the agency’s vision for fostering a robust research and innovation ecosystem. Speaking to an audience of academics, students, and industry representatives, Satria emphasized the importance of universities playing a central role in advancing research and development, particularly in supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and local industries. He highlighted that the establishment of Regional Innovation Houses—centers designed to facilitate collaborative research and innovation—is a key component of this strategy.

These Regional Innovation Houses are intended to act as hubs where researchers from various universities within a single province can collaborate, share ideas, and work on projects that address both provincial and district-level challenges. By bringing together diverse expertise, these centers aim to generate innovative solutions tailored to specific regional needs, thereby contributing to the overall economic growth and sustainability of Indonesia. Satria also mentioned that the first such house, known as the Indonesia Innovation House, is set to open later this year, signaling a phased approach to expanding this network nationwide.

In addition to promoting regional innovation, BRIN is also pushing for the creation of science techno parks on university campuses. These spaces are meant to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application, enabling closer ties between educational institutions and the private sector.
