Seven local SPD groups in Hesse have issued an open letter criticizing the party’s current course, accusing it of adopting policies that damage its credibility and push voters toward far-right parties. The letter was sent to both federal lawmakers and the national party leadership, with signatories including representatives from the Jusos youth wing, the SPD Women's Group, the 60 Plus working group, the Health Care Social Democrats, the Workers' Association, Self-Activists, and the SPD Queer network in Hesse. The open letter states that the cuts implemented by the coalition government, comprising the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), have harmed not just individuals but also the party’s reputation. It argues that these measures have driven many disillusioned voters into the arms of populist and right-wing parties. The signatories demand a clear correction of direction from the SPD’s parliamentary faction, calling for social democratic politics that support those in need. They emphasize the need for a party willing to shape the future rather than merely managing social welfare reductions. The letter was signed by prominent figures from several key factions within the Hessian SPD. These include leaders from the Jusos, the women’s organization, the 60 Plus group, the health sector association, the workers’ group, the self-activists, and the queer community. Their collective criticism reflects growing internal tensions over how the SPD should respond to economic challenges and societal demands. Earlier this week, the executive board of the SPD district in Bielefeld had already expressed concerns about the national party’s direction. In a statement known as a “brandbrief,” they noted that many members were rightly disappointed. Over years, they had placed their hopes in the SPD as a social conscience, yet now they were forced to support decisions that contradict core values. The Bielefelders criticized the party for aligning too closely with the conservative coalition, which they argue has eroded public trust. In addition, the Bielefeld letter called on party chairwoman Bärbel Bas and deputy chairperson Lars Klingbeil to choose between their roles as national leaders and their positions in state governments. The authors argued that both roles must be clearly separated to allow for genuine political renewal. They emphasized that party leaders should be able to critique the government even while holding office, ensuring transparency and accountability. The criticisms reflect broader frustrations within the SPD over recent policy choices, particularly regarding austerity measures and the handling of social issues. Many see the party as losing touch with its traditional base and failing to offer a compelling alternative to the far right. As internal divisions deepen, the SPD faces mounting pressure to redefine its strategy and rebuild its appeal among voters who feel abandoned by mainstream politics.
