Studio Illumination, known for its long-standing success in creating unforgettable animated characters and stories, has announced its latest project, Not Alone, a new animated comedy adventure set to debut in theaters on April 15, 2027. The film marks the studio’s return to the big screen with a unique story centered around three space creatures who accidentally land on Earth and seek a way back home. Directed by Eric Guillon, co-director of Despicable Me 3, and alongside Claire Dodgson, editor of Despicable Me 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and The Secret Life of Pets 2, and Jonathan Del Val, co-director of Minions: The Rise of Gru and The Secret Life of Pets 2, the movie promises to deliver a fresh and imaginative experience for audiences. The plot follows Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic played by Timothée Chalamet in his original voice role, who lives a quiet, solitary life. His world turns upside down when he meets Fran, a brilliant astrobotanist portrayed by Selena Gomez, who is developing the world's first biofuel-powered rocket. As they prepare for the launch of this revolutionary spacecraft, their chemistry sparks, though neither is particularly adept at romantic situations. Their plans take an unexpected turn when three small, fearless, and lovable alien beings crash into Joe’s home. These aliens, Dunk, Welly, and Shirm, are fleeing from Zandro, a bumbling yet determined interplanetary cop. The trio believes Fran’s rocket could provide them with a safe passage back to their home planet. The voices of the aliens in the original version will be provided by renowned British comedic actors Rob Brydon (Barbie, Trip), Diane Morgan (Cunk On, Mandy), and Jamie Demetriou (Cruella, Jay Kelly) in the lead roles of Dunk, Welly, and Shirm respectively. Zandro, the inept police officer, is voiced by Brett Goldstein, a two-time Emmy winner known for his work on Ted Lasso and Office Space Romance. Additional voices include Oscar-winning actress Allison Janney, who lends her talent to the film, and Lamorne Morris, an Emmy award winner recognized for his performances in Fargo and Spider-Noir. Eric Guillon, who brings extensive experience from his time working on films such as The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, collaborates with Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val on this new venture. The production team includes Chris Meledandri, founder and executive chairman of Illumination Entertainment, along with executive producers Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis, and David Distenfeld. The film is described as a comedic adventure with a focus on animation, blending humor, heart, and the universal theme of finding one’s way home. The cast features a mix of A-list celebrities and established voices in the industry. Timothée Chalamet, a four-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner, stars alongside Selena Gomez, who has won awards for acting and music. Brett Goldstein, Rob Brydon, Jamie Demetriou, Diane Morgan, Allison Janney, and Lamorne Morris round out the voice cast, each bringing their distinct talents to the characters they portray. The release date for Not Alone has been officially set for April 15, 2027, with advance screenings already available to the public. Fans of Illumination’s previous works, including Despicable Me, Minions, Sing, and The Secret Life of Pets, can look forward to another family-friendly animated feature that combines humor, creativity, and emotional depth. The film aims to continue the legacy of successful animated franchises while introducing new characters and narratives that resonate with both children and adults alike. With a blend of familiar faces and new voices, Not Alone is positioned to become a standout entry in Illumination’s portfolio. The studio has built a reputation for delivering high-quality animated films that entertain and inspire, and this new project appears poised to follow in that tradition. As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build among fans eager to see how this new story unfolds on the big screen.
