A Russian cruise missile struck eastern Poland early Thursday, creating a crater nearly 10 meters wide and five meters deep near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia south of Lublin. The incident occurred during a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine, which killed at least eight people and injured 50, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The strike came amid reports that Russia launched around 280 drones and more than 70 rockets, including several targeting Lviv, a major city in western Ukraine. One of these missiles crossed into Polish territory, traveling approximately 100 kilometers in six minutes before exploding on a field. The missile impact was detected by the Polish Air Force, which had deployed fighter jets to monitor the airspace following Russian attacks on western Ukraine. At 3:40 a.m., the Polish military registered an unidentified flying object entering Polish airspace and issued an air alert. The object disappeared from radar shortly after, having traveled over 900 kilometers per hour. According to footage released by the Polish news portal Onet, a nearby farm's surveillance camera captured debris and dust swirling through the air at 3:46 a.m., confirming the timing of the explosion. Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andriy Sybiha, informed Warsaw that the missile was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile, launched from aircraft. Based on the size of the crater, officials estimated the missile carried about 200 kilograms of explosives. Fortunately, there were no casualties or damage in Poland, according to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who visited the site later in the day. He described the incident as a result of a massive Russian operation, one of the largest attacks of the war so far. Tusk emphasized that there was no indication the attack targeted Poland directly. Polish forces had been ordered to shoot down the missile if it headed toward inhabited areas, but it crashed before reaching such zones. Tusk stated he would consult with European Union leaders to investigate the incident further. This marks the fourth time since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that its forces have violated Polish airspace, though this is the first instance of a cruise missile exploding within Poland. The incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense systems. Zelenskyy criticized the gaps in his country’s defenses, noting that while the army managed to shoot down a significant number of incoming projectiles, there is a critical shortage of anti-aircraft missiles. Delays in receiving Western support have contributed to the destruction and loss of life witnessed in recent days. Earlier Wednesday evening, Zelenskyy warned of an impending large-scale Russian attack, prompting thousands of civilians in Kyiv to seek shelter in subway stations once again. Poland has pledged to assist Ukraine with air defense capabilities, including Patriot systems crucial for intercepting ballistic missiles. However, the speed and range of the Russian missile highlight the challenges faced by both countries in countering increasingly sophisticated threats.
