The largest infrastructure investment in recent years at Zagreb’s Bus Terminal has officially begun, with over 1.36 million euros allocated for repairs and upgrades. The project, which will span this year and the first half of next, aims to strengthen the steel structure of the terminal, improve fire safety systems, upgrade information technology, and install automated barriers at sanitation facilities. All funds will come from the terminal's own resources, according to reports from local media. The investment plans were outlined by Josip Krajina, head of Zagreb Bus Terminal, during a report presented to the City Council following a recent incident where glass fell from a platform. The report was requested on the initiative of the Club of City Deputies Drito. Krajina emphasized that the focus of the current year’s investments is on infrastructure reinforcement, operational security, and technological modernization. He noted that the total amount of 1.36 million euros represents a continuation of efforts to ensure long-term functionality and efficiency. The projects are divided into two categories: those required by legal obligations and those aimed at improving operations. Legal obligation-related projects total 775,000 euros, with 390,000 euros allocated specifically for repairing the steel structure. Another 385,000 euros is earmarked for establishing a stable fire suppression system. The steel structure repair is being carried out in two phases. The first phase, worth 300,000 euros, involves restoring the tension cables of the external canopy and repairing damaged concrete sections of the roof. It is scheduled to be completed by July 21. The second phase, valued at 90,000 euros, is planned to run from July 22 to January 20 of next year, focusing on protecting all steel elements and repairing the suspended ceiling. The installation of a stable fire suppression system is expected to begin between July and September. For operational improvements, 590,000 euros have been set aside. These include investments in an information system, a generator, microphones for ticket counters, and automated barriers for sanitation facility usage. Among these, the largest individual investment is the information system, costing 250,000 euros. This project started in October last year and is expected to conclude in March 2027. It includes procurement, implementation, and commissioning of a business system for handling bus traffic, passenger services, ticket sales, parking, cloakrooms, and sanitation facilities. An additional 190,000 euros is allocated for installing automated barriers at sanitation facilities. Work on this began in June and is expected to finish in August. Krajina explained that the main goal is to establish and permanently secure payment continuity for sanitation facility use, thereby eliminating financial losses. The investment includes the installation of payment and pedestrian barriers, automatic cash registers, associated IT equipment, and civil and electrical works. He added that the new automated barriers will enable reliable access control, automated payments, simple maintenance, and service support. A comprehensive reconstruction of the sanitation facilities on two floors is also planned, with work starting no later than the second quarter of next year. From September to December, microphones will be installed at ticket counters to enhance communication with passengers. A generator for electric power supply, costing 145,000 euros, is also scheduled for installation during the same period. Over the past five years, approximately 670,000 euros have been invested in the terminal. Krajina noted that the terminal recorded a total revenue of 4.6 million euros last year, compared to 4.49 million euros the previous year. In 2023, revenues reached 5.26 million euros, while in 2022 they totaled 4.63 million euros. In the second half of 2021, revenues amounted to nearly two million euros. After the earthquake in 2020, it was confirmed that the building is safe for use without restrictions. Last year, an analysis of the condition of the steel structure, including canopies, was conducted. Works on repairing parts of the structure requiring urgent protection against further collapse were underway and were expected to be completed by the end of July. Remaining recommended interventions are still under consideration.
