Mojib Latif, a climatologist and oceanographer based at the University of Kiel and the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, has expressed deep concern over the current situation, emphasizing that while such conditions were predicted, their rapid onset has been alarming. Latif pointed out that although Earth is composed largely of water, about 70 percent, only 2.5 percent of this is freshwater. Most of that freshwater is locked away in polar ice caps and glaciers, leaving only a fraction available for human use without significant effort. He stressed that society must take collective action to conserve water, noting that both individuals and industries have roles to play in reducing waste. The professor highlighted the role of large data centers powered by artificial intelligence, which consume vast amounts of water alongside electricity. He called for broader societal engagement, urging governments to establish policies that promote sustainable practices. At the same time, he emphasized that industries must also bear responsibility for their substantial water usage. To mitigate water loss, Latif proposed covering reservoirs with solar panels, which would prevent evaporation while generating renewable energy. This dual-purpose approach could help address both water conservation and energy production challenges. However, he acknowledged that compromises might be necessary in implementing such solutions. Latif criticized the trend of private investors purchasing water sources, warning that it has turned water into a lucrative commodity rather than a public resource. He argued that corporations often acquire water rights for minimal cost, which undermines equitable access. He warned that if this trend continues, water scarcity could lead to conflicts, particularly in regions already experiencing stress from melting glaciers and reduced snowmelt. The scientist underscored that water should be treated as a fundamental human right, not a tradable asset. He noted that many countries share rivers and rely on cross-border agreements to manage water distribution. For example, Pakistan and India depend on shared river systems, yet fewer than half of such nations currently have binding treaties ensuring long-term cooperation. Latif insisted that establishing such agreements is crucial to preventing disputes over water resources. As a private individual, Latif advised people to adopt habits that reduce water consumption, such as fixing leaks promptly and using water-efficient appliances. He urged citizens to recognize their role in preserving water resources and to advocate for systemic changes that prioritize sustainability over profit. His message was clear: the current crisis demands immediate and sustained efforts from all sectors of society to ensure water remains accessible and protected for future generations.
