In Australia alone, three of its vessels, Adventure, Encounter, and Splendor, are active, with crew members typically serving nine-month contracts. Workers describe long hours, with many reporting shifts lasting 12 to 14 hours per day, seven days a week. Queen Onuoha, a Nigerian beauty specialist who worked aboard the Carnival Adventure and Encounter, stated she frequently worked 14-hour days and relied on caffeine tablets to maintain alertness during her shifts. According to contracts reviewed by ABC News, some crew members earn as little as $23.26 per day, translating to roughly $2.75 per hour when divided by a standard 12-hour shift. This figure does not include tips, which are rare and inconsistent. The Maritime Union of Australia has documented hundreds of complaints regarding both working and living conditions on Carnival ships over the past year. When questioned about wages, a Carnival spokesperson referenced a February statement asserting, “Carnival has nothing to hide.” The disparity between passenger amenities and crew provisions is stark. Carnival markets its dining experience with promises of variety and quality, offering everything from Masala Tiger to Mongolian Wok dishes. However, crew members receive significantly less. Queen recounted that crew meals consist largely of leftover food from passenger dining areas, often served cold or reheated. Delilah, a housekeeper who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed this practice, describing how surplus food is repeatedly recycled for crew consumption rather than discarded. “We take the leftovers and refrigerate them, reheat them, give them to the crew,” Delilah explained. “If there are leftovers again, they keep on recycling.” She added that the food can sometimes be spoiled, leading to frequent cases of gastroenteritis among workers. Queen noted that she had to spend $50 weekly on food due to concerns about the quality of the provided meals. “Sometimes you end up not getting anything that you can actually eat and you’re expecting me to work 12 hours,” she said. “How do I do that on an empty stomach?” Water safety is another concern. While the ship’s water supply is shared between passengers and crew, several workers have expressed doubts about its safety. Two employees reported seeing small worms in the water, describing them as “those very tiny red ones.” As a result, many crew members purchase bottled water from Carnival, though they are restricted to just two bottles per day for drinking and bathing purposes. The conditions highlighted by ABC News have sparked further calls for transparency and accountability within the cruise industry.
